धृतराष्ट्र उवाच
मृगया शोभना तात गवां च समवेक्षणम् ॥
विश्रम्भस् तु न गन्तव्यो बल्लवानाम् इति स्मरे ॥
ते तु तत्र नरव्याघ्राः समीप इति नः श्रुतम् ॥
अतो नाभ्यनुजानामि गमनं तत्र वः स्वयम् ॥
छद्मना निर्जितास् ते हि कर्शिताश् च महावने ॥
तपोनित्याश् च राधेय समर्थाश् च महारथाः ॥
धर्मराजो न संक्रुध्येद् भीमसेनस् त्व् अमर्षणः ॥
यज्ञसेनस्य दुहिता तेज एव तु केवलम् ॥
यूयं चाप्य् अपराध्येयुर् दर्पमोहसमन्विताः ॥
ततो विनिर्दहेयुस् ते तपसा हि समन्विताः ॥
अथ वा सायुधा वीरा मन्युनाभिपरिप्लुताः ॥
सहिता बद्धनिस्त्रिंशा दहेयुः शस्त्रतेजसा ॥
अथ यूयं बहुत्वात् तान् आरभध्वं कथं चन ॥
अनार्यं परमं तत् स्याद् अशक्यं तच् च मे मतम् ॥
उषितो हि महाबाहुर् इन्द्रलोके धनंजयः ॥
दिव्यान्य् अस्त्राण्य् अवाप्याथ ततः प्रत्यागतो वनम् ॥
अकृतास्त्रेण पृथिवी जिता बीभत्सुना पुरा ॥
किं पुनः स कृतास्त्रो ऽद्य न हन्याद् वो महारथः ॥
अथ वा मद्वचः श्रुत्वा तत्र यत्ता भविष्यथ ॥
उद्विग्नवासो विश्रम्भाद् दुःखं तत्र भविष्यति ॥
अथ वा सैनिकाः के चिद् अपकुर्युर् युधिष्ठिरे ॥
तद् अबुद्धिकृतं कर्म दोषम् उत्पादयेच् च वः ॥
तस्माद् गच्छन्तु पुरुषाः स्मारणायाप्तकारिणः ॥
न स्वयं तत्र गमनं रोचये तव भारत ॥

yūyaṃ cāpy aparādhyeyur darpamohasamanvitāḥ ||
tato vinirdaheyus te tapasā hi samanvitāḥ ||
atha vā sāyudhā vīrā manyunābhipariplutāḥ ||
sahitā baddhanistriṃśā daheyuḥ śastratejasā ||
atha yūyaṃ bahutvāt tān ārabhadhvaṃ kathaṃ cana ||
anāryaṃ paramaṃ tat syād aśakyaṃ tac ca me matam ||
uṣito hi mahābāhur indraloke dhanaṃjayaḥ ||
divyāny astrāṇy avāpyātha tataḥ pratyāgato vanam ||
akṛtāstreṇa pṛthivī jitā bībhatsunā purā ||
kiṃ punaḥ sa kṛtāstro 'dya na hanyād vo mahārathaḥ ||
atha vā madvacaḥ śrutvā tatra yattā bhaviṣyatha ||
udvignavāso viśrambhād duḥkhaṃ tatra bhaviṣyati ||
atha vā sainikāḥ ke cid apakuryur yudhiṣṭhire ||
tad abuddhikṛtaṃ karma doṣam utpādayec ca vaḥ ||
tasmād gacchantu puruṣāḥ smāraṇāyāptakāriṇaḥ ||
na svayaṃ tatra gamanaṃ rocaye tava bhārata ||
Dhritarashtra said: "The hunt is good, my son, and so is the inspection of the cattle, but I recall that one should not place too much trust in cowherds. We have heard that those tigers among men are nearby; therefore I myself do not permit you to go there. They have been defeated by deceit, worn down in the great forest, ever engaged in austerity, yet they are strong and mighty warriors. The Dharmaraja may not grow angry, but Bhimasena is impatient, and the daughter of Yajnasena is fire itself. You, filled with pride and delusion, might offend again; then they, being full of tapas, would burn you to ashes. Or else those armed heroes, overflowing with wrath, together, with swords girded at their sides, would consume you with the blaze of their weapons. If, relying on numbers, you should somehow attack them, that would be utterly ignoble; and in my judgment it would also be impossible. The mighty-armed Dhananjaya dwelt in the world of Indra, obtained divine weapons, and then returned to the forest. When Bibhatsu had not yet gained these weapons, he conquered the earth before; how then, now armed with them, would that great warrior fail to slay you? Or else, having heard my words, you may be cautious there; but a life spent in anxious distrust will be wretched there. Or some soldiers might do harm to Yudhishthira; that deed, done without sense, would bring guilt upon you. Therefore let trustworthy men go for the counting; but that you yourself should go there, O Bharata, I do not approve."
