Vaishampayana said: "King Duryodhana, stopping here and there in the forest, came to the ghoshas and made camp there. The people set up dwellings in a beautiful, well-known place, with water, trees, and every good quality; nearby they built many separate dwellings for Karna, Shakuni, and all the brothers. Then he saw hundreds and thousands of cows and marked them all with signs and brands. He branded the calves, identified the pregnant cows, and likewise set apart the young calves. Having taken a count and marked the three-year-olds, the son of Kuru, surrounded by cowherds, amused himself joyfully. All the townsfolk and thousands of warriors played in that forest like immortals. Cowherd-singers, skilled in dance and music, and adorned maidens came before the son of Dhritarashtra. The king, surrounded by women, joyfully gave them wealth, as well as suitable food and various drinks. Then all together they began to surround tigers, buffaloes, deer, gavayas, bears, and boars. He struck them down with arrows, caught elephants in the great forest, and in beautiful places had the animals seized. Enjoying dairy products and pleasures, gazing on exceedingly beautiful flowering forests full of intoxicated bees and peacock cries, he gradually came to the holy lake Dvaitavana, endowed with the highest splendor, like great Indra bearing the vajra."

Duryodhana comes to the sacred place not as a pilgrim but as a man of luxury and the hunt. The contrast with the Pandavas' forest life is deliberately sharp.
