Seeing that the Gandharvas were frightened, Chitrasena, filled with indignation, sprang up from his seat in anger, intent upon their destruction. Then, resorting to the maya-astra, the master of wondrous paths joined battle; the Kauravas were bewildered by Chitrasena's illusion. Each warrior of Dhritarashtra found himself surrounded by ten Gandharvas. Pressed then by that great force, they fled in fear on the battlefield to where King Yudhishthira was. When the forces of Dhritarashtra were broken on every side, Karna Vaikartana stood like an unmoving mountain. Duryodhana, Karna, Shakuni son of Subala, and the others, though badly wounded, went on fighting the Gandharvas. But all the Gandharvas, by the hundreds and then by the thousands, rushed together upon Karna in battle, seeking to kill him. Mighty warriors, with swords, pattishas, spears and maces, they surrounded the charioteer's son on every side, seeking his death. Some cut his yoke, others brought down his banner. Some struck the pole, others the horses, others the charioteer. Some struck down the parasol, others the guard-rail, others the seat; many thousands of Gandharvas shattered the chariot into pieces. Then the charioteer's son, leaping down from the chariot with sword and shield, mounted Vikarna's chariot and drove the horses toward safety."

Chitrasena's illusion shatters the Kauravas' hollow confidence. Karna escapes, and the expedition conceived as a spectacle of another's humiliation begins to turn against its own instigators.
