Janamejaya asked: "What was the word, great brahmin, that Lomasha then spoke to Yudhishthira? What great fear of Karna did he have, that this soul devoted to dharma told no one about?" Vaishampayana answered: "I shall tell you this story, best of the Bharatas. When the twelfth year of the Pandavas had passed and the thirteenth was approaching, Indra, wishing their welfare, resolved to beg alms from Karna. Surya, learning Mahendra's intention, came to Karna for the sake of the earrings. At the end of the night's sleep the radiant one, seized by pity and paternal love, appeared to the hero as he lay on his costly bed, trustworthy, honoring brahmins, and truthful. Having assumed by yoga the form of a brahmin versed in the Vedas, Surya, for his good, spoke gently to Karna."

After the stories of Sita and Savitri, the narrative turns to another tragedy: Karna too will be tested through the gift and through faithfulness to his word.
