Pṛthā wept long and bitterly. At night, together with her nurse, longing to see her son, she set the casket adrift in the waters of the Aśvā. Having released it for fear that her father would learn of it, she returned once more into the royal house, overcome with grief. The casket passed from the Aśvā into the Carmaṇvatī, from the Carmaṇvatī into the Yamunā, and thence into the Gaṅgā. Borne along the Gaṅgā, it reached the land of the sūtas, the city of Campā. The infant in the casket was carried by the waves, yet he continued to wear the divine armor born of nectar, together with its earrings, fashioned by fate.

The rivers carry Karṇa toward a new family. Already his destiny moves between his heavenly origin and his earthly standing as a sūta's son.
