The eldest son of the suta grew up among the Angas, mighty and clad in divine armor. Pritha learned of him through a spy. When Adhiratha saw that his son had grown, he sent him to Varanasahva. There Karna studied under Drona the arts of the bow and of weapons, became friends with Duryodhana, received from Drona, Kripa, and Rama the four kinds of weapon-knowledge, became renowned, and attained the highest mastery of archery. Having allied himself with the son of Dhritarashtra, he took the side of enmity toward the Parthas and always desired to fight with Arjuna. From the moment Karna and Arjuna first met, there had always been rivalry between them. Yudhishthira, seeing Karna with his earrings and armor and considering him invulnerable in battle, suffered. When at midday Karna, standing in the water with joined palms, praised Surya, brahmins would come to him for the sake of wealth; at that time there was nothing among the twice-born that he would not give. Then Indra, taking the form of a brahmin, came and said, "Give me alms," and Radheya answered him, "Welcome."

Karna joins true generosity, great mastery, and misplaced loyalty to Duryodhana. His virtues do not undo the tragic direction in which he places them.
