At the yaksha's word the Pandavas rose, and hunger and thirst instantly left them all. Yudhishthira said: "You stand on one foot in the lake, unconquerable one. Who are you, a god? I do not take you for a yaksha. Perhaps you are one of the Vasus, of the Rudras, the best of the Maruts, Vajrin, or the lord of the gods? My brothers are able to fight hundreds of thousands, and I see no means by which they could be struck down. Yet they have woken up happily, their senses clear. Are you our friend, or are you our father?" The yaksha said: "I am your father, son -- Dharma, gentle in might. I have come to see you. Know me, bull of the Bharatas. Fame, truth, self-control, purity, honesty, modesty, steadfastness, giving, austerity, and celibacy are my bodies. Nonviolence, equanimity, peace, austerity, purity, and freedom from envy are my gates. You are always dear to me. It is fortunate that you are attached to the five; fortunate that you have conquered the six: the first two, the middle two, and the last two, which lead to the final end. I am Dharma, blessings on you; I came to test you. I am pleased with your non-cruelty, and I will grant you a boon. Choose, O king; for my devotees there is no evil fate."

The yaksha turns out to be Dharma, Yudhishthira's father. The trial was not a punishment but a revelation that Yudhishthira is truly Dharma's son.
