भीम उवाच
पौरोगवो ब्रुवाणो ऽहं बल्लवो नाम नामतः ॥
उपस्थास्यामि राजानं विराटम् इति मे मतिः ॥
सूपान् अस्य करिष्यामि कुशलो ऽस्मि महानसे ॥
कृतपूर्वाणि यैर् अस्य व्यञ्जनानि सुशिक्षितैः ॥
तान् अप्य् अभिभविष्यामि प्रीतिं संजनयन्न् अहम् ॥
आहरिष्यामि दारूणां निचयान् महतो ऽपि च ॥
तत् प्रेक्ष्य विपुलं कर्म राजा प्रीतो भविष्यति ॥
द्विपा वा बलिनो राजन् वृषभा वा महाबलाः ॥
विनिग्राह्या यदि मया निग्रहीष्यामि तान् अपि ॥
ये च के चिन् नियोत्स्यन्ति समाजेषु नियोधकाः ॥
तान् अहं निहनिष्यामि प्रीतिं तस्य विवर्धयन् ॥
न त्व् एतान् युध्यमानान् वै हनिष्यामि कथं चन ॥
तथैतान् पातयिष्यामि यथा यास्यन्ति न क्षयम् ॥
आरालिको गोविकर्ता सूपकर्ता नियोधकः ॥
आसं युधिष्ठिरस्याहम् इति वक्ष्यामि पृच्छतः ॥
आत्मानम् आत्मना रक्षंश् चरिष्यामि विशां पते ॥
इत्य् एतत् प्रतिजानामि विहरिष्याम्य् अहं यथा ॥

paurogavo bruvāṇo 'haṃ ballavo nāma nāmataḥ ||
upasthāsyāmi rājānaṃ virāṭam iti me matiḥ ||
sūpān asya kariṣyāmi kuśalo 'smi mahānase ||
kṛtapūrvāṇi yair asya vyañjanāni suśikṣitaiḥ ||
tān apy abhibhaviṣyāmi prītiṃ saṃjanayann aham ||
āhariṣyāmi dārūṇāṃ nicayān mahato 'pi ca ||
tat prekṣya vipulaṃ karma rājā prīto bhaviṣyati ||
dvipā vā balino rājan vṛṣabhā vā mahābalāḥ ||
vinigrāhyā yadi mayā nigrahīṣyāmi tān api ||
ye ca ke cin niyotsyanti samājeṣu niyodhakāḥ ||
tān ahaṃ nihaniṣyāmi prītiṃ tasya vivardhayan ||
na tv etān yudhyamānān vai haniṣyāmi kathaṃ cana ||
tathaitān pātayiṣyāmi yathā yāsyanti na kṣayam ||
ārāliko govikartā sūpakartā niyodhakaḥ ||
āsaṃ yudhiṣṭhirasyāham iti vakṣyāmi pṛcchataḥ ||
ātmānam ātmanā rakṣaṃś cariṣyāmi viśāṃ pate ||
ity etat pratijānāmi vihariṣyāmy ahaṃ yathā ||
Bhima said: 'I will call myself Ballava and, saying that I am a royal cook, I will serve King Virata. Such is my resolve. I am skilled in the kitchen and will prepare soups for him; even those who have long been trained in preparing his dishes I will surpass, bringing him delight. I will bring in great piles of firewood, and seeing such mighty labor, the king will be pleased. If powerful elephants or mighty bulls need to be subdued, I will subdue them too. And the wrestlers who challenge me in the assemblies I will defeat, increasing his pleasure. But fighting them, I will never kill anyone: I will throw them down in such a way that they do not perish. If I am asked, I will say: "I was Yudhishthira's cook, I butchered cattle, prepared soups, and wrestled." Thus I will live, guarding myself by myself. This I promise.'
