अथ मासे चतुर्थे तु ब्रह्मणः सुमहोत्सवः ॥
आसीत् समृद्धो मत्स्येषु पुरुषाणां सुसंमतः ॥
तत्र मल्लाः समापेतुर् दिग्भ्यो राजन् सहस्रशः ॥
महाकाया महावीर्याः कालखञ्जा इवासुराः ॥
वीर्योन्नद्धा बलोदग्रा राज्ञा समभिपूजिताः ॥
सिंहस्कन्धकटिग्रीवाः स्ववदाता मनस्विनः ॥
असकृल्लब्धलक्षास् ते रङ्गे पार्थिवसंनिधौ ॥
तेषाम् एको महान् आसीत् सर्वमल्लान् समाह्वयत् ॥
आवल्गमानं तं रङ्गे नोपतिष्ठति कश् चन ॥
यदा सर्वे विमनसस् ते मल्ला हतचेतसः ॥
अथ सूदेन तं मल्लं योधयाम् आस मत्स्यराट् ॥
चोद्यमानस् ततो भीमो दुःखेनैवाकरोन् मतिम् ॥
न हि शक्नोति विवृते प्रत्याख्यातुं नराधिपम् ॥
ततः स पुरुषव्याघ्रः शार्दूलशिथिलं चरन् ॥
प्रविवेश महारङ्गं विराटम् अभिहर्षयन् ॥
बबन्ध कक्ष्यां कौन्तेयस् ततस् तं हर्षयञ् जनम् ॥
ततस् तं वृत्रसंकाशं भीमो मल्लं समाह्वयत् ॥

teṣām eko mahān āsīt sarvamallān samāhvayat ||
āvalgamānaṃ taṃ raṅge nopatiṣṭhati kaś cana ||
yadā sarve vimanasas te mallā hatacetasaḥ ||
atha sūdena taṃ mallaṃ yodhayām āsa matsyarāṭ ||
codyamānas tato bhīmo duḥkhenaivākaron matim ||
na hi śaknoti vivṛte pratyākhyātuṃ narādhipam ||
tataḥ sa puruṣavyāghraḥ śārdūlaśithilaṃ caran ||
praviveśa mahāraṅgaṃ virāṭam abhiharṣayan ||
babandha kakṣyāṃ kaunteyas tatas taṃ harṣayañ janam ||
tatas taṃ vṛtrasaṃkāśaṃ bhīmo mallaṃ samāhvayat ||
In the fourth month a great and rich festival of Brahma was held among the Matsyas, held in high honor by the people. There, O king, wrestlers came by the thousands from every direction: huge of body, mighty in strength, like the Kalakhanja asuras. Swollen with valor, exalted in strength, honored by the king, with necks, shoulders, and waists like lions, self-assured and proud, they had already won prizes many times in the arena before the king. Among them was one great wrestler who challenged them all. When he strode about the arena, no one came forward against him. When all the wrestlers grew despondent and lost their resolve, the king of the Matsyas made the cook fight him. Urged on, Bhima resolved with difficulty, for he could not openly refuse the king. Then that tiger among men, moving freely like a tiger, entered the great arena, delighting Virata. The son of Kunti girded himself, delighting the people, and challenged that wrestler who resembled Vritra.’
