"Many sutas and magadhas with fine voices, wearing polished jeweled earrings, waited upon him morning and evening. A thousand sages, rich in austerity and knowledge, always sat in his assembly, receiving everything they desired. The blind, the old, the helpless, and all the poor throughout the lands — Yudhishthira constantly sustained them without discouragement, out of compassion. And now he has come to a hell: a servant of Matsya, a dice-player in the king's assembly, Yudhishthira is called Kanka. When he dwelt in Indraprastha, all kings brought him tribute at the appointed time; today he seeks his keep from others. Sovereigns of the earth, kings, were once subject to him; now this king, deprived of his freedom, stands in the power of others. Once he blazed with splendor over the whole earth like the radiant sun; now he is a mere companion at dice in the court of King Virata. That king whom kings, together with sages, once served in assembly — look, Pandava, today this Pandava serves another. Who would not feel grief on seeing righteous Yudhishthira, the wise, who for the sake of life has taken on what he does not deserve? Hero, once the whole earth served him in assembly; look, Bharata, now this Bharata serves another. Why, Bhima, do you not see me, tormented by so many kinds of suffering, as though helpless in the middle of an ocean of grief?"

In this lament, Yudhishthira is not being belittled — the tragedy of a king's fallen dharma is being laid bare. The higher his former generosity, the sharper the present dependence appears.
