वैशंपायन उवाच
अथाब्रवीन् महावीर्यो द्रोणस् तत्त्वार्थदर्शिवान् ॥
न तादृशा विनश्यन्ति नापि यान्ति पराभवम् ॥
शूराश् च कृतविद्याश् च बुद्धिमन्तो जितेन्द्रियाः ॥
धर्मज्ञाश् च कृतज्ञाश् च धर्मराजम् अनुव्रताः ॥
नीतिधर्मार्थतत्त्वज्ञं पितृवच् च समाहितम् ॥
धर्मे स्थितं सत्यधृतिं ज्येष्ठं ज्येष्ठापचायिनम् ॥
अनुव्रता महात्मानं भ्रातरं भ्रातरो नृप ॥
अजातशत्रुं ह्रीमन्तं तं च भ्रातॄन् अनुव्रतम् ॥
तेषां तथा विधेयानां निभृतानां महात्मनाम् ॥
किमर्थं नीतिमान् पार्थः श्रेयो नैषां करिष्यति ॥
तस्माद् यत्नात् प्रतीक्षन्ते कालस्योदयम् आगतम् ॥
न हि ते नाशम् ऋच्छेयुर् इति पश्याम्य् अहं धिया ॥
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
athābravīn mahāvīryo droṇas tattvārthadarśivān ||
na tādṛśā vinaśyanti nāpi yānti parābhavam ||
śūrāś ca kṛtavidyāś ca buddhimanto jitendriyāḥ ||
dharmajñāś ca kṛtajñāś ca dharmarājam anuvratāḥ ||
nītidharmārthatattvajñaṃ pitṛvac ca samāhitam ||
dharme sthitaṃ satyadhṛtiṃ jyeṣṭhaṃ jyeṣṭhāpacāyinam ||
anuvratā mahātmānaṃ bhrātaraṃ bhrātaro nṛpa ||
ajātaśatruṃ hrīmantaṃ taṃ ca bhrātṝn anuvratam ||
teṣāṃ tathā vidheyānāṃ nibhṛtānāṃ mahātmanām ||
kimarthaṃ nītimān pārthaḥ śreyo naiṣāṃ kariṣyati ||
tasmād yatnāt pratīkṣante kālasyodayam āgatam ||
na hi te nāśam ṛccheyur iti paśyāmy ahaṃ dhiyā ||
Vaishampayana said: 'Then Drona, of great valor, who sees the true meaning of things, spoke: "Such men do not perish, nor do they meet defeat. They are brave, learned, wise, masters of their senses; they know dharma, are grateful, and devoted to the King of Dharma. Their elder knows the essence of statecraft, dharma, and gain; he is composed like a father, established in dharma, firm in truth, and honors his elders. These great-souled brothers, O king, follow their brother Ajatashatru, who is modest, and he in turn follows his brothers. If they are so obedient, unassuming, and great-souled, why would the wise Partha not bring about their welfare? Therefore I judge with my reason: they are patiently awaiting the rising of time that has come; they will not meet destruction."'

Drona sees the Pandavas through their qualities, not through rumor. Where there is self-mastery, loyalty, and an elder established in dharma, disappearance is not the same as defeat.
