Vaishampayana said: “When Matsya had gone forth against the Trigartas, seeking to protect his own cattle, Duryodhana, together with his counselors, advanced upon Virata. Bhishma, Drona, Karna, Kripa the knower of the highest weapons, Drauni, Saubala, lord Duhshasana, Vivimshati, Vikarna, mighty Chitrasena, Durmukha, Duhsaha, and other great chariot-warriors—all of them, having come upon the Matsyas, upon the land of King Virata, swiftly scattered the herdsmen's camps and by force carried off the wealth of cattle. The Kurus drove off sixty thousand cows, surrounding them on every side with a great array of chariots. Among the herdsmen's camps, as those great chariot-warriors struck them down, a tremendous outcry arose in the terrible onslaught. The terrified chief of the cowherds mounted his chariot in haste and sped straight for the city, wailing as one in anguish. Entering the city, he went to the king's palace, quickly descended from his chariot, and went in to tell what had happened.”

The Kauravas' plan counts on an empty city. They strike not at a strong army but at a defenseless household, and so the raid at once lays bare the moral character of the conflict.
