Uttara said: 'We have heard that a corpse is tied to this tree. How then, as a prince, could I touch it with my hand? It is not fitting for me, born of a kshatriya lineage, a great prince, virtuous and versed in mantras and sacrifices, to touch such a thing. If I touch the body and become impure, like a bearer of the dead, how will you, Brihannada, make me fit for society again?' Brihannada said: 'You will be fit for society, O king, and pure. Do not be afraid: these are bows, there is no body here. How could I make you -- heir of the king of the Matsyas, born in a noble line and wise -- perform a reprehensible deed, O son of the king?' Vaishampayana said: 'Thus addressed by Partha, he, wearing his earrings, leapt down from the chariot and, reluctant, climbed the shami tree. Dhananjaya, destroyer of enemies, standing on the chariot, instructed him: "Quickly undo their binding." Having loosened their fastenings on every side, he saw there the Gandiva together with four other bows. As these bows, radiant as the sun, were released, a divine light streamed from them, as at the rising of planets. Beholding their form, like uncoiling serpents, Vairati in an instant stood with his hair standing on end, seized with fear.'

Uttara fears defilement, yet finds instead the sanctity of kshatriya duty. Fear of a dead body gives way to awe before the living power of weapons.
