द्रोण उवाच
यथा रथस्य निर्घोषो यथा शङ्ख उदीर्यते ॥
कम्पते च यथा भूमिर् नैषो ऽन्यः सव्यसाचिनः ॥
शस्त्राणि न प्रकाशन्ते न प्रहृष्यन्ति वाजिनः ॥
अग्नयश् च न भासन्ते समिद्धास् तन् न शोभनम् ॥
प्रत्य् आदित्यं च नः सर्वे मृगा घोरप्रवादिनः ॥
ध्वजेषु च निलीयन्ते वायसास् तन् न शोभनम् ॥
शकुनाश् चापसव्या नो वेदयन्ति महद् भयम् ॥
गोमायुर् एष सेनाया रुवन् मध्ये ऽनुधावति ॥
अनाहतश् च निष्क्रान्तो महद् वेदयते भयम् ॥
भवतां रोमकूपाणि प्रहृष्टान्य् उपलक्षये ॥
पराभूता च वः सेना न कश् चिद् योद्धुम् इच्छति ॥
विवर्णमुखभूयिष्ठाः सर्वे योधा विचेतसः ॥
गाः संप्रस्थाप्य तिष्ठामो व्यूढानीकाः प्रहारिणः ॥

kampate ca yathā bhūmir naiṣo 'nyaḥ savyasācinaḥ ||
śastrāṇi na prakāśante na prahṛṣyanti vājinaḥ ||
agnayaś ca na bhāsante samiddhās tan na śobhanam ||
praty ādityaṃ ca naḥ sarve mṛgā ghorapravādinaḥ ||
dhvajeṣu ca nilīyante vāyasās tan na śobhanam ||
śakunāś cāpasavyā no vedayanti mahad bhayam ||
gomāyur eṣa senāyā ruvan madhye 'nudhāvati ||
anāhataś ca niṣkrānto mahad vedayate bhayam ||
bhavatāṃ romakūpāṇi prahṛṣṭāny upalakṣaye ||
parābhūtā ca vaḥ senā na kaś cid yoddhum icchati ||
vivarṇamukhabhūyiṣṭhāḥ sarve yodhā vicetasaḥ ||
gāḥ saṃprasthāpya tiṣṭhāmo vyūḍhānīkāḥ prahāriṇaḥ ||
Drona said: 'As the chariot rumbles, as the conch resounds, and as the earth trembles -- this is none other than Savyasachin. Our weapons do not gleam; our horses take no joy; our kindled fires do not shine brightly -- this bodes ill. All the fearsomely crying beasts stand facing the sun, and crows settle upon our banners -- this bodes ill. Birds circling us on the left proclaim great danger. See, a jackal runs howling through the midst of the army; it has come forth unwounded, and it proclaims great danger. I see that the hair on your bodies has stood on end. Your army is already broken in spirit; no one wishes to fight. Nearly all the warriors are pale of face and bereft of their senses. Having sent the cattle on ahead, let us stand with our armies arrayed, ready to strike.'
