विराट उवाच
किमर्थं पाण्डवश्रेष्ठ भार्यां दुहितरं मम ॥
प्रतिग्रहीतुं नेमां त्वं मया दत्ताम् इहेच्छसि ॥
अर्जुन उवाच
अन्तःपुरे ऽहम् उषितः सदा पश्यन् सुतां तव ॥
रहस्यं च प्रकाशं च विश्वस्ता पितृवन् मयि ॥
प्रियो बहुमतश् चाहं नर्तको गीतकोविदः ॥
आचार्यवच् च मां नित्यं मन्यते दुहिता तव ॥
वयःस्थया तया राजन् सह संवत्सरोषितः ॥
अतिशङ्का भवेत् स्थाने तव लोकस्य चाभिभो ॥
तस्मान् निमन्त्रये त्वाहं दुहितुः पृथिवीपते ॥
शुद्धो जितेन्द्रियो दान्तस् तस्याः शुद्धिः कृता मया ॥
स्नुषाया दुहितुर् वापि पुत्रे चात्मनि वा पुनः ॥
अत्र शङ्कां न पश्यामि तेन शुद्धिर् भविष्यति ॥
अभिषङ्गाद् अहं भीतो मिथ्याचारात् परंतप ॥
स्नुषार्थम् उत्तरां राजन् प्रतिगृह्णामि ते सुताम् ॥
स्वस्रीयो वासुदेवस्य साक्षाद् देवशिशुर् यथा ॥
दयितश् चक्रहस्तस्य बाल एवास्त्रकोविदः ॥
अभिमन्युर् महाबाहुः पुत्रो मम विशां पते ॥
जामाता तव युक्तो वै भर्ता च दुहितुस् तव ॥

antaḥpure 'ham uṣitaḥ sadā paśyan sutāṃ tava ||
rahasyaṃ ca prakāśaṃ ca viśvastā pitṛvan mayi ||
priyo bahumataś cāhaṃ nartako gītakovidaḥ ||
ācāryavac ca māṃ nityaṃ manyate duhitā tava ||
vayaḥsthayā tayā rājan saha saṃvatsaroṣitaḥ ||
atiśaṅkā bhavet sthāne tava lokasya cābhibho ||
tasmān nimantraye tvāhaṃ duhituḥ pṛthivīpate ||
śuddho jitendriyo dāntas tasyāḥ śuddhiḥ kṛtā mayā ||
snuṣāyā duhitur vāpi putre cātmani vā punaḥ ||
atra śaṅkāṃ na paśyāmi tena śuddhir bhaviṣyati ||
abhiṣaṅgād ahaṃ bhīto mithyācārāt paraṃtapa ||
snuṣārtham uttarāṃ rājan pratigṛhṇāmi te sutām ||
svasrīyo vāsudevasya sākṣād devaśiśur yathā ||
dayitaś cakrahastasya bāla evāstrakovidaḥ ||
abhimanyur mahābāhuḥ putro mama viśāṃ pate ||
jāmātā tava yukto vai bhartā ca duhitus tava ||
Virata said: 'Why, best of the Pandavas, do you not wish to accept as wife my daughter, given by me to you here?' Arjuna said: 'I dwelt in the inner chambers and always saw your daughter — both in private and in public. She trusted me as a father. I was dear and honored as a dancer and master of song, and your daughter always regarded me as a teacher. O king, I lived a year together with a girl of ripe age; suspicion on your part and on the part of the people would be natural. Therefore I ask you for your daughter as a daughter-in-law, lord of the earth. I am pure, I have conquered my senses and am self-controlled; her purity has been established by me. Regarding a daughter-in-law or a daughter, a son or oneself, I see no cause for suspicion here; thus purity shall be. I fear accusation and false conduct, O scorcher of foes; therefore I accept your daughter Uttara for my son. Abhimanyu, my great-armed son, nephew of Vasudeva, like a divine child, dear to the wielder of the discus, still young yet skilled in arms — is a fitting son-in-law for you and husband for your daughter, O lord of men.'
