अहल्या धर्षिता पूर्वम् ऋषिपत्नी यशस्विनी ॥
जीवतो भर्तुर् इन्द्रेण स वः किं न निवारितः ॥
बहूनि च नृशंसानि कृतानीन्द्रेण वै पुरा ॥
वैधर्म्याण्य् उपधाश् चैव स वः किं न निवारितः ॥
उपतिष्ठतु मां देवी एतद् अस्या हितं परम् ॥
युष्माकं च सदा देवाः शिवम् एवं भविष्यति ॥
देवा ऊचुः
इन्द्राणीम् आनयिष्यामो यथेच्छसि दिवस्पते ॥
जहि क्रोधम् इमं वीर प्रीतो भव सुरेश्वर ॥
शल्य उवाच
इत्य् उक्त्वा ते तदा देवा ऋषिभिः सह भारत ॥
जग्मुर् बृहस्पतिं वक्तुम् इन्द्राणीं चाशुभं वचः ॥

jīvato bhartur indreṇa sa vaḥ kiṃ na nivāritaḥ ||

upatiṣṭhatu māṃ devī etad asyā hitaṃ param ||
yuṣmākaṃ ca sadā devāḥ śivam evaṃ bhaviṣyati ||
devā ūcuḥ
indrāṇīm ānayiṣyāmo yathecchasi divaspate ||
jahi krodham imaṃ vīra prīto bhava sureśvara ||
śalya uvāca
ity uktvā te tadā devā ṛṣibhiḥ saha bhārata ||
jagmur bṛhaspatiṃ vaktum indrāṇīṃ cāśubhaṃ vacaḥ ||
"Why did you not restrain him? Many were the acts of cruelty, unrighteousness, and deceit committed by Indra in former times. Why did you not restrain him? Let the goddess grant me pleasure; that will be her lasting benefit. And in this way it will further serve your own safety as well, O gods!" The gods said: "We shall bring the queen of Indra to you the moment you give the command, O lord of the heavens! Abandon this anger, valiant soul! Be at peace, O lord of the gods!" Shalya continued: "Having spoken thus to him, the gods, together with the sages, went to tell Brihaspati and Indra's queen the grievous news. And they said: 'We know, O best of brahmanas, that the queen of Indra has come to your house seeking refuge, and that you have promised her protection, O foremost of the divine sages!'"
