ब्राह्मीं हि योनिम् आपन्नः सुगुह्यम् अपि यो वदेत् ॥
न तेन गर्ह्यो देवानां तस्माद् एतद् ब्रवीमि ते ॥
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच
ब्रवीहि विदुर त्वं मे पुराणं तं सनातनम् ॥
कथम् एतेन देहेन स्याद् इहैव समागमः ॥
वैशंपायन उवाच
चिन्तयाम् आस विदुरस् तम् ऋषिं संशितव्रतम् ॥
स च तच् चिन्तितं ज्ञात्वा दर्शयाम् आस भारत ॥
स चैनं प्रतिजग्राह विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा ॥
सुखोपविष्टं विश्रान्तम् अथैनं विदुरो ऽब्रवीत् ॥
भगवन् संशयः कश् चिद् धृतराष्ट्रस्य मानसे ॥
यो न शक्यो मया वक्तुं तम् अस्मै वक्तुम् अर्हसि ॥
यं श्रुत्वायं मनुष्येन्द्रः सुखदुःखातिगो भवेत् ॥

na tena garhyo devānāṃ tasmād etad bravīmi te ||
dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca
bravīhi vidura tvaṃ me purāṇaṃ taṃ sanātanam ||
katham etena dehena syād ihaiva samāgamaḥ ||
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
cintayām āsa viduras tam ṛṣiṃ saṃśitavratam ||
sa ca tac cintitaṃ jñātvā darśayām āsa bhārata ||
sa cainaṃ pratijagrāha vidhidṛṣṭena karmaṇā ||
sukhopaviṣṭaṃ viśrāntam athainaṃ viduro 'bravīt ||
bhagavan saṃśayaḥ kaś cid dhṛtarāṣṭrasya mānase ||
yo na śakyo mayā vaktuṃ tam asmai vaktum arhasi ||
yaṃ śrutvāyaṃ manuṣyendraḥ sukhaduḥkhātigo bhavet ||
Yet the understanding that the Rishi lives a life of celibacy, I hold to be boundless. One who is a brahmin by birth, even when speaking of the deepest secrets, is never censured by the gods. It is only for this reason that I do not speak with you on this matter.' Dhritarashtra said: 'Tell me, O Vidura, how, in this very body of mine, I might meet with that ancient and immortal one?' Vaishampayana said: 'Then Vidura began to think of that Rishi of severe vows. And knowing that he was being thought of, the Rishi, O Bharata, appeared there. Vidura then received him with the rites prescribed by sacred ordinance. And when, having rested a while, the Rishi sat at ease, Vidura addressed him with these words: 'O illustrious one, there is a doubt in the mind of Dhritarashtra which I am unable to explain.'
