译文

If he refuses to submit, he will deserve death at everyone's hands. Indeed, he deserves death at my own hands, O Bharata, as much as at anyone else's, since throughout your childhood he never ceased persecuting all of you, and since this wicked and sinful wretch seized your kingdom and could not bear to see Yudhishthira prosper. Many times, O Partha, he tried to turn me against you, but I never gave weight to those malicious attempts of his. You know, O mighty-armed one, what Duryodhana's cherished intentions are, and you also know that I seek only the welfare of the righteous King Yudhishthira. So, knowing Duryodhana's heart and knowing my own most cherished wishes, why then, O Arjuna, do you harbor such misgivings about me, as though you were a stranger to it all? You are also aware of that grave deed which was ordained by heaven. How, then, O Partha, can peace be made with such an enemy? Yet whatever can be accomplished, O Pandavas, by word or by deed, all of it I shall do. But do not expect, O Partha, that peace with this enemy is truly possible. Was it not about a year ago, on the occasion of the raid on Virata's cattle, that Bhishma, on the way back, begged Duryodhana for this very peace, so beneficial to all? Believe me, they suffered defeat even then, when their defeat had already been decided by you. Indeed, Suyodhana will not agree to part with the smallest portion of the kingdom, even for the briefest span of time. As for myself, I always obey the commands of Yudhishthira, and so the sinful deeds of this wicked wretch must once again turn over in my mind!'
