Nārada said: 'Raised to heaven by virtuous earthly lords generous with gifts, Yayāti, having obtained permission from his daughter's sons, ascended to the heavenly world. He was showered with a rain of fragrant, many-colored flowers and embraced by a pure wind bearing a blessed fragrance. Ascending to the immovable abode won through the merit of his daughter's sons, and enlarged by his own deeds, he blazed forth with supreme glory. Hosts of gandharvas and apsaras sang for him and danced for him; in heaven he was joyfully received with the sound of drums. Various gods, royal seers, and celestial bards praised him; the gods honored him with the highest offering and greeted him with joy.'

Yayāti's return to heaven comes about through the merit of his descendants, yet it is confirmed by his own deeds. The verses stress a reciprocity: a lineage can uphold an ancestor, but the radiance returns because his former good deeds were never entirely destroyed.
