तैः कृत्वा सह संघातं गिरिदुर्गालयांश् चर ॥
काले व्यसनम् आकाङ्क्षन् नैवायम् अजरामरः ॥
संजयो नामतश् च त्वं न च पश्यामि तत् त्वयि ॥
अन्वर्थनामा भव मे पुत्र मा व्यर्थनामकः ॥
सम्यग्दृष्टिर् महाप्राज्ञो बालं त्वां ब्राह्मणो ऽब्रवीत् ॥
अयं प्राप्य महत् कृच्छ्रं पुनर् वृद्धिं गमिष्यति ॥
तस्य स्मरन्ती वचनम् आशंसे विजयं तव ॥
तस्मात् तात ब्रवीमि त्वां वक्ष्यामि च पुनः पुनः ॥
यस्य ह्य् अर्थाभिनिर्वृत्तौ भवन्त्य् आप्यायिताः परे ॥
तस्यार्थसिद्धिर् नियता नयेष्व् अर्थानुसारिणः ॥
taiḥ kṛtvā saha saṃghātaṃ giridurgālayāṃś cara ||
kāle vyasanam ākāṅkṣan naivāyam ajarāmaraḥ ||
saṃjayo nāmataś ca tvaṃ na ca paśyāmi tat tvayi ||
anvarthanāmā bhava me putra mā vyarthanāmakaḥ ||
samyagdṛṣṭir mahāprājño bālaṃ tvāṃ brāhmaṇo 'bravīt ||
ayaṃ prāpya mahat kṛcchraṃ punar vṛddhiṃ gamiṣyati ||
tasya smarantī vacanam āśaṃse vijayaṃ tava ||
tasmāt tāta bravīmi tvāṃ vakṣyāmi ca punaḥ punaḥ ||
yasya hy arthābhinirvṛttau bhavanty āpyāyitāḥ pare ||
tasyārthasiddhir niyatā nayeṣv arthānusāriṇaḥ ||
‘Form an alliance with them and roam through mountain strongholds and refuges, awaiting the right moment for the enemy’s misfortune: for he is not immortal, nor eternally young. Your name is Sanjaya, but I do not see its meaning in you. My son, become one who lives up to his name, not a man with an empty name. Once a brahmin of true vision and great wisdom said of you, still a child: “Having met with great hardship, he will rise again to prosperity.” Remembering his words, I hope for your victory. Therefore, my son, I tell you, and I shall tell you again and again: for one whose undertaking, once successful, satisfies others, success is certain, provided he follows his aim through the proper means of policy.’
