वैशंपायन उवाच
कुन्त्यास् तु वचनं श्रुत्वा भीष्मद्रोणौ महारथौ ॥
दुर्योधनम् इदं वाक्यम् ऊचतुः शासनातिगम् ॥
श्रुतं ते पुरुषव्याघ्र कुन्त्याः कृष्णस्य संनिधौ ॥
वाक्यम् अर्थवद् अव्यग्रम् उक्तं धर्म्यम् अनुत्तमम् ॥
तत् करिष्यन्ति कौन्तेया वासुदेवस्य संमतम् ॥
न हि ते जातु शाम्येरन्न् ऋते राज्येन कौरव ॥
क्लेशिता हि त्वया पार्था धर्मपाशसितास् तदा ॥
सभायां द्रौपदी चैव तैश् च तन् मर्षितं तव ॥
कृतास्त्रं ह्य् अर्जुनं प्राप्य भीमं च कृतनिश्रमम् ॥
गाण्डीवं चेषुधी चैव रथं च ध्वजम् एव च ॥
सहायं वासुदेवं च न क्षंस्यति युधिष्ठिरः ॥
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
kuntyās tu vacanaṃ śrutvā bhīṣmadroṇau mahārathau ||
duryodhanam idaṃ vākyam ūcatuḥ śāsanātigam ||
śrutaṃ te puruṣavyāghra kuntyāḥ kṛṣṇasya saṃnidhau ||
vākyam arthavad avyagram uktaṃ dharmyam anuttamam ||
tat kariṣyanti kaunteyā vāsudevasya saṃmatam ||
na hi te jātu śāmyerann ṛte rājyena kaurava ||
kleśitā hi tvayā pārthā dharmapāśasitās tadā ||
sabhāyāṃ draupadī caiva taiś ca tan marṣitaṃ tava ||
kṛtāstraṃ hy arjunaṃ prāpya bhīmaṃ ca kṛtaniśramam ||
gāṇḍīvaṃ ceṣudhī caiva rathaṃ ca dhvajam eva ca ||
sahāyaṃ vāsudevaṃ ca na kṣaṃsyati yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ||
Vaishampayana said: Having heard the words of Kunti, the great chariot-warriors Bhishma and Drona spoke these words to Duryodhana, who had transgressed their counsel: 'You have heard, O tiger among men, what Kunti said in the presence of Krishna — a speech meaningful, calm, righteous, and unsurpassed. The sons of Kunti will do what Vasudeva has approved; for they will never make peace without the kingdom, O Kaurava. The Parthas were tormented by you, and then they were bound by the fetters of dharma; Draupadi was insulted in the assembly, and all of this they endured because of you. But now, having Arjuna, skilled in weapons, and Bhima, hardened by training, having Gandiva, the quivers, the chariot, the banner, and Vasudeva as their ally, Yudhishthira will not forgive.'

Bhishma and Drona no longer speak as counselors seeking compromise at any cost, but as witnesses to inevitable consequences. Peace is still possible — but only through Duryodhana's humility and his acknowledgment of the debt owed to the Pandavas.
