न त्व् एवोत्सादनीया मे पाण्डोः पुत्रा नराधिप ॥
तस्माद् योधान् हनिष्यामि प्रयोगेणायुतं सदा ॥
एवम् एषां करिष्यामि निधनं कुरुनन्दन ॥
न चेत् ते मां हनिष्यन्ति पूर्वम् एव समागमे ॥
सेनापतिस् त्व् अहं राजन् समयेनापरेण ते ॥

spardhate hi sadātyarthaṃ sūtaputro mayā raṇe ||

nāhaṃ jīvati gāṅgeye yotsye rājan kathaṃ cana ||
hate bhīṣme tu yotsyāmi saha gāṇḍīvadhanvanā ||
But the sons of Pandu, O lord of men, must not be destroyed by me. Therefore I shall always slay ten thousand warriors in each engagement. Thus I shall bring about their destruction, O joy of the Kurus, unless they slay me first in the encounter. I shall be your commander-in-chief, O king, on one more condition; hear it from me here. Let Karna fight first, or let me, O lord of the earth, for the son of a suta always rivals me excessively in battle." Karna said: "While Gangeya lives, O king, I will in no way fight. When Bhishma is slain, then I shall enter battle with the wielder of the Gandiva bow."

Bhishma's answer reveals the tragic duality of his position: bound by duty to the throne, he does not renounce his knowledge of the truth or his attachment to the Pandavas.
