यस् त्वं वृद्धं सर्वराज्ञां हितबुद्धिं जितेन्द्रियम् ॥
मरणाय महाबुद्धिं दीक्षयित्वा विकत्थसे ॥
भावस् ते विदितो ऽस्माभिर् दुर्बुद्धे कुलपांसन ॥
न हनिष्यन्ति गङ्गेयं पाण्डवा घृणयेति च ॥
यस्य वीर्यं समाश्रित्य धार्तराष्ट्र विकत्थसे ॥
हन्तास्मि प्रथमं भीष्मं मिषतां सर्वधन्विनाम् ॥
कैतव्य गत्वा भरतान् समेत्य; सुयोधनं धार्तराष्ट्रं ब्रवीहि ॥
तथेत्य् आह अर्जुनः सव्यसाची; निशाव्यपाये भविता विमर्दः ॥
यद् वो ऽब्रवीद् वाक्यम् अदीनसत्त्वो; मध्ये कुरूणां हर्षयन् सत्यसंधः ॥
अहं हन्ता पाण्डवानाम् अनीकं; शाल्वेयकांश् चेति ममैष भारः ॥

maraṇāya mahābuddhiṃ dīkṣayitvā vikatthase ||
bhāvas te vidito 'smābhir durbuddhe kulapāṃsana ||

yasya vīryaṃ samāśritya dhārtarāṣṭra vikatthase ||
hantāsmi prathamaṃ bhīṣmaṃ miṣatāṃ sarvadhanvinām ||
kaitavya gatvā bharatān sametya; suyodhanaṃ dhārtarāṣṭraṃ bravīhi ||
tathety āha arjunaḥ savyasācī; niśāvyapāye bhavitā vimardaḥ ||
yad vo 'bravīd vākyam adīnasattvo; madhye kurūṇāṃ harṣayan satyasaṃdhaḥ ||
ahaṃ hantā pāṇḍavānām anīkaṃ; śālveyakāṃś ceti mamaiṣa bhāraḥ ||
"You boast of having consecrated to death an elder — one who wishes well, who has mastered his senses, who is great in wisdom, honored by all kings. Your intent is known to us, O evil-minded disgrace of your line: you suppose that the Pandavas will not kill Gangeya out of compassion. O son of Dhritarashtra, that very Bhishma on whose strength you rely and boast — him I shall kill first, before the eyes of all the archers. O son of Kitava, go, gather the Bharatas, and tell Dhartarashtra Suyodhana: 'Thus spoke Savyasachin Arjuna: at the end of the night there will be battle.'"

Arjuna answers not on the level of insult but on the level of the kshatriya standard: a man relies on his own strength, not on hiding behind another's. His decisive blow strikes at the very foundation of Duryodhana's confidence: Bhishma, on whose might that confidence rests, will fall first. After the words of Krishna and Arjuna, war becomes an inevitable morning's business, and the order to stand ready already sounds like the opening of battle.
