भजस्व मां विशालाक्ष स्वयं कन्याम् उपस्थिताम् ॥
अनन्यपूर्वां राजेन्द्र त्वत्प्रसादाभिकाङ्क्षिणीम् ॥
ताम् एवं भाषमाणां तु शाल्वः काशिपतेः सुताम् ॥
अत्यजद् भरतश्रेष्ठ त्वचं जीर्णाम् इवोरगः ॥
एवं बहुविधैर् वाक्यैर् याच्यमानस् तयानघ ॥
नाश्रद्दधच् छाल्वपतिः कन्याया भरतर्षभ ॥
ततः सा मन्युनाविष्टा ज्येष्ठा काशिपतेः सुता ॥
अब्रवीत् साश्रुनयना बाष्पविह्वलया गिरा ॥
त्वया त्यक्ता गमिष्यामि यत्र यत्र विशां पते ॥
तत्र मे सन्तु गतयः सन्तः सत्यं यथाब्रुवम् ॥

evaṃ bahuvidhair vākyair yācyamānas tayānagha ||
nāśraddadhac chālvapatiḥ kanyāyā bharatarṣabha ||
tataḥ sā manyunāviṣṭā jyeṣṭhā kāśipateḥ sutā ||
abravīt sāśrunayanā bāṣpavihvalayā girā ||
tvayā tyaktā gamiṣyāmi yatra yatra viśāṃ pate ||
tatra me santu gatayaḥ santaḥ satyaṃ yathābruvam ||
"Accept me, O wide-eyed one, a maiden who has come of her own accord, who has not belonged to another before, O lord of kings, longing for your favor." But Shalva, O best of the Bharatas, rejected this daughter of the king of Kashi as she spoke, as a serpent sheds its old skin. Though she, O sinless one, entreated him with many words, the lord of Shalva did not believe the maiden, O bull among the Bharatas. Then the eldest daughter of the lord of Kashi, overcome with anger, said with tearful eyes, in a voice choked with sobbing: "Rejected by you, O lord of peoples, I shall go wherever I must. Let my paths there lie among the righteous, for I have spoken the truth."

Amba finds herself caught between two men's decisions: Bhishma releases her in keeping with dharma, while Shalva rejects her out of fear and pride. Her speech rests on the truth of an inward choice: she never accepted Bhishma and has come to the one her heart chose. But Shalva sees not her truth, only the outward touch of the victor. Thus Amba's personal tragedy becomes the fruit of martial pride and social suspicion.
