कृतम् अस्या भवेत् कार्यं कन्याया भृगुनन्दन ॥
वाक्यं सत्यं च ते वीर भविष्यति कृतं विभो ॥
इयं चापि प्रतिज्ञा ते तदा राम महामुने ॥
जित्वा वै क्षत्रियान् सर्वान् ब्राह्मणेषु प्रतिश्रुतम् ॥
ब्राह्मणः क्षत्रियो वैश्यः शूद्रश् चैव रणे यदि ॥
ब्रह्मद्विड् भविता तं वै हनिष्यामीति भार्गव ॥
शरणं हि प्रपन्नानां भीतानां जीवितार्थिनाम् ॥
न शक्ष्यामि परित्यागं कर्तुं जीवन् कथं चन ॥
यश् च क्षत्रं रणे कृत्स्नं विजेष्यति समागतम् ॥
दृप्तात्मानम् अहं तं च हनिष्यामीति भार्गव ॥
kṛtam asyā bhavet kāryaṃ kanyāyā bhṛgunandana ||
vākyaṃ satyaṃ ca te vīra bhaviṣyati kṛtaṃ vibho ||
iyaṃ cāpi pratijñā te tadā rāma mahāmune ||
jitvā vai kṣatriyān sarvān brāhmaṇeṣu pratiśrutam ||
brāhmaṇaḥ kṣatriyo vaiśyaḥ śūdraś caiva raṇe yadi ||
brahmadviḍ bhavitā taṃ vai haniṣyāmīti bhārgava ||
śaraṇaṃ hi prapannānāṃ bhītānāṃ jīvitārthinām ||
na śakṣyāmi parityāgaṃ kartuṃ jīvan kathaṃ cana ||
yaś ca kṣatraṃ raṇe kṛtsnaṃ vijeṣyati samāgatam ||
dṛptātmānam ahaṃ taṃ ca haniṣyāmīti bhārgava ||
'...then this maiden's cause will be accomplished, O descendant of Bhrigu, and your word, O hero, O lord, will truly be fulfilled. And moreover, O Rama, O great sage, you once made a promise before the brahmins, having conquered all the kshatriyas: "If a brahmin, a kshatriya, a vaishya, or a shudra becomes a hater of brahmins in battle, I will kill him, O Bhargava." As long as I live, I shall never be able to abandon those who have come to me for refuge, frightened and desiring to save their lives. And whoever, proud of spirit, conquers in battle the whole assembled kshatriya host, him too I will kill, O Bhargava.'

In this chapter Rama first tries to settle the matter by word alone: he promises to bring Bhishma and Shalva under the sway of his speech and recalls that he takes up arms only under a special obligation. But Amba does not accept so gentle a resolution: her plea has already become a demand for rightful retribution. Akritavrana reinforces her position, reminding Rama of his own vow to protect those who take refuge in him and to punish arrogant kshatriya might. Thus word, vow, and refuge come together: Rama approaches Bhishma first as a teacher, yet already ready to act as a warrior should righteous speech be refused.
