भीष्म उवाच
समागतस्य रामेण पुनर् एवातिदारुणम् ॥
अन्येद्युस् तुमुलं युद्धं तदा भरतसत्तम ॥
ततो दिव्यास्त्रविच् छूरो दिव्यान्य् अस्त्राण्य् अनेकशः ॥
अयोजयत धर्मात्मा दिवसे दिवसे विभुः ॥
तान्य् अहं तत्प्रतीघातैर् अस्त्रैर् अस्त्राणि भारत ॥
व्यधमं तुमुले युद्धे प्राणांस् त्यक्त्वा सुदुस्त्यजान् ॥
अस्त्रैर् अस्त्रेषु बहुधा हतेष्व् अथ च भार्गवः ॥
अक्रुध्यत महातेजास् त्यक्तप्राणः स संयुगे ॥
ततः शक्तिं प्राहिणोद् घोररूपाम्; अस्त्रै रुद्धो जामदग्न्यो महात्मा ॥
कालोत्सृष्टां प्रज्वलिताम् इवोल्कां; संदीप्ताग्रां तेजसावृत्य लोकान् ॥

samāgatasya rāmeṇa punar evātidāruṇam ||
anyedyus tumulaṃ yuddhaṃ tadā bharatasattama ||
tato divyāstravic chūro divyāny astrāṇy anekaśaḥ ||
ayojayata dharmātmā divase divase vibhuḥ ||
tāny ahaṃ tatpratīghātair astrair astrāṇi bhārata ||
vyadhamaṃ tumule yuddhe prāṇāṃs tyaktvā sudustyajān ||
astrair astreṣu bahudhā hateṣv atha ca bhārgavaḥ ||
akrudhyata mahātejās tyaktaprāṇaḥ sa saṃyuge ||
tataḥ śaktiṃ prāhiṇod ghorarūpām; astrai ruddho jāmadagnyo mahātmā ||
kālotsṛṣṭāṃ prajvalitām ivolkāṃ; saṃdīptāgrāṃ tejasāvṛtya lokān ||
Bhishma said: When on the next day I again met Rama in battle, an exceedingly dreadful and tumultuous fight began, O best of the Bharatas. Then that righteous and mighty hero, knower of the divine astras, day after day repeatedly employed celestial weapons. These astras, O Bharata, I dispersed in the tumultuous battle with counter-astras, ready to give up a life so hard to relinquish. When many of his astras had been struck down by other astras, Bhargava, great in splendor and having scorned his own life, grew wrathful in the fight. Then the great-souled Jamadagnya, checked by my astras, sent forth a spear of dreadful form: it was like a blazing meteor released by Kala himself, its tip aflame, covering the worlds with its radiance.

In this chapter the duel between Bhishma and Rama reaches its highest intensity: ordinary arrows give way to divine astras, spears, images of fire, and cosmic comparisons. The text stresses not only the warriors' strength but its price: both are ready to give up their lives, both bleed, and even the weapons of teacher and pupil become almost a natural cataclysm. Bhishma acts decisively, yet he calls Rama his teacher; so the victory here cannot be a simple joy. The battle again breaks off at sunset, a reminder that dharma sets a limit even where fury and a vow drive the fighters further.
