शिष्यार्थं प्रददौ चापि द्रोणाय कुरुपुंगव ॥
शिखण्डिनं महाराज पुत्रं स्त्रीपूर्विणं तथा ॥
प्रतिपेदे चतुष्पादं धनुर्वेदं नृपात्मजः ॥
शिखण्डी सह युष्माभिर् धृष्टद्युम्नश् च पार्षतः ॥
मम त्व् एतच् चरास् तात यथावत् प्रत्यवेदयन् ॥
जडान्धबधिराकारा ये युक्ता द्रुपदे मया ॥
एवम् एष महाराज स्त्रीपुमान् द्रुपदात्मजः ॥
संभूतः कौरवश्रेष्ठ शिखण्डी रथसत्तमः ॥
ज्येष्ठा काशिपतेः कन्या अम्बा नामेति विश्रुता ॥
द्रुपदस्य कुले जाता शिखण्डी भरतर्षभ ॥

jyeṣṭhā kāśipateḥ kanyā ambā nāmeti viśrutā ||
drupadasya kule jātā śikhaṇḍī bharatarṣabha ||
O best of the Kurus, he gave Shikhandin, his son who had once been a woman, to Drona to be his pupil. The prince Shikhandin, together with you and Dhrishtadyumna, son of Prishata, mastered the whole of the Dhanurveda. My spies, O dear one, whom I placed at Drupada's court in the guise of the mute, the blind, and the deaf, duly reported all this to me. Thus, O great king, this son of Drupada, Shikhandin, the finest of charioteers, came into being as a woman turned man. The eldest daughter of the king of Kashi, known by the name Amba, O best of the Bharatas, was born into Drupada's lineage as Shikhandin.

This chapter completes the story of Shikhandin: Amba's fate takes effective form through a temporary exchange of sex with the yaksha Sthuna. The yaksha's favor saves Drupada from war and makes Shikhandin a man, but that favor comes at a price — Kubera punishes Sthuna for the unauthorized breach of order. Bhishma learned all this from his spies, and so sees in Shikhandin not an ordinary warrior but the former Amba, born for his destruction. His refusal to fight one who had been a woman becomes not weakness but the continuation of his own vow and the boundary of dharma that he does not cross even in battle.
