O joy of the Kurus, I shall tell you of the island Sudarshana. O great king, this island is round and shaped like a wheel. It is covered with the waters of rivers, with mountains resembling clouds, with cities of various shapes, with beautiful countries, with trees bearing flowers and fruits; it is rich in wealth and grain, and on every side it is surrounded by the salt ocean. As a man sees his own face in a mirror, so the island Sudarshana is seen in the orb of the moon. There, in two parts, the pippala tree is seen, and in two parts, a great hare; it abounds on every side with plantings of every herb. Beyond it other waters are to be known. Thus is this brief survey told.
