Shakuni son of Subala, Shalya, Jayadratha of Sindhu, Vinda and Anuvinda of Avanti, Sudakshina of Kamboja, Shrutayudha of Kalinga, king Jayatsena, Brihadbala of Koshala, and Kritavarman of the Satvatas — these ten tigers among men, heroes with arms like iron bars, were lords of akshauhinis, performers of sacrifices with rich gifts. These and many other kings and princes, prudent and mighty, followers of Duryodhana's will, stood armed in their ranks. All of them bore banners, wore black antelope skins, and were wreathed with munja grass, as though consecrated for the world of Brahma and destined for Duryodhana's cause. Ten abundant armies took up their positions, while the eleventh, the great army of the sons of Dhritarashtra and the Kauravas, stood before all the forces, where the son of Shantanu was the leader.

The roll call of kings underscores the scale of support behind Duryodhana: sacrificers, rulers, and princes of many lands stand with him. Yet their consecration "for the world of Brahma" rings tragic — an outward readiness to die does not purify the unrighteous cause for which they have gathered.
