Shri Bhagavan said: "They speak of the imperishable ashvattha tree, its root above and its branches below; its leaves are the hymns of the Vedas. One who knows this tree knows the Vedas. Its branches, nourished by the gunas and bearing the shoots of sense objects, spread downward and upward; downward too its roots stretch, bound to karma in the world of men. Its true form is not perceived here: it has neither end nor beginning nor firm foundation. Having cut down this ashvattha with its deeply grown root by the firm sword of non-attachment, one must then seek that place from which, once reached, there is no returning, and take refuge in that primordial Purusha from whom the ancient stream has flowed forth. Freed from pride and delusion, having conquered the fault of attachment, ever established in the knowledge of the self, their desires gone, free from the dualities of happiness and sorrow, the undeluded reach that imperishable goal. Neither the sun nor the moon nor fire illumines it; having reached it, none return. This is My supreme abode."

The image of the inverted tree shows the world as rooted above itself yet branching downward through the gunas, the objects of sense, and karma. It cannot be overcome by curiosity; what is needed is the sword of non-attachment and surrender to the primordial Purusha.
