अभिमन्युः सुसंक्रुद्धः पिशङ्गैस् तुरगोत्तमैः ॥
संयुक्तं रथम् आस्थाय प्रायाद् भीष्मरथं प्रति ॥
जाम्बूनदविचित्रेण कर्णिकारेण केतुना ॥
अभ्यवर्षत भीष्मं च तांश् चैव रथसत्तमान् ॥
स तालकेतोस् तीक्ष्णेन केतुम् आहत्य पत्रिणा ॥
भीष्मेण युयुधे वीरस् तस्य चानुचरैः सह ॥
कृतवर्माणम् एकेन शल्यं पञ्चभिर् आयसैः ॥
विद्ध्वा नवभिर् आनर्छच् छिताग्रैः प्रपितामहम् ॥
पूर्णायतविसृष्टेन सम्यक् प्रणिहितेन च ॥
ध्वजम् एकेन विव्याध जाम्बूनदविभूषितम् ॥
दुर्मुखस्य तु भल्लेन सर्वावरणभेदिना ॥
जहार सारथेः कायाच् छिरः संनतपर्वणा ॥
धनुश् चिच्छेद भल्लेन कार्तस्वरविभूषितम् ॥
कृपस्य निशिताग्रेण तांश् च तीक्ष्णमुखैः शरैः ॥
जघान परमक्रुद्धो नृत्यन्न् इव महारथः ॥
तस्य लाघवम् उद्वीक्ष्य तुतुषुर् देवता अपि ॥
लब्धलक्ष्यतया कर्ष्णेः सर्वे भीष्ममुखा रथाः ॥
सत्त्ववन्तम् अमन्यन्त साक्षाद् इव धनंजयम् ॥
तस्य लाघवमार्गस्थम् अलातसदृशप्रभम् ॥
दिशः पर्यपतच् चापं गाण्डीवम् इव घोषवत् ॥

jahāra sāratheḥ kāyāc chiraḥ saṃnataparvaṇā ||
dhanuś ciccheda bhallena kārtasvaravibhūṣitam ||
kṛpasya niśitāgreṇa tāṃś ca tīkṣṇamukhaiḥ śaraiḥ ||
jaghāna paramakruddho nṛtyann iva mahārathaḥ ||
tasya lāghavam udvīkṣya tutuṣur devatā api ||
labdhalakṣyatayā karṣṇeḥ sarve bhīṣmamukhā rathāḥ ||
sattvavantam amanyanta sākṣād iva dhanaṃjayam ||
tasya lāghavamārgastham alātasadṛśaprabham ||
diśaḥ paryapatac cāpaṃ gāṇḍīvam iva ghoṣavat ||
Greatly enraged, Abhimanyu mounted his chariot, yoked with excellent tawny horses, and set out toward Bhishma's chariot. Beneath a standard bearing the karnikara tree, adorned with gold of Jambunada, he showered arrows on both Bhishma and those finest of charioteers. With a sharp, feathered arrow he struck the palm-tree banner, and then the hero fought against Bhishma and his followers. With one arrow he pierced Kritavarman, with five iron arrows Shalya, and with nine sharp-tipped arrows he struck the great-grandsire. With a single, precisely aimed arrow loosed from his fully drawn bow, he pierced the gold-adorned banner. With a broad-headed shaft that cleaves through every guard, he struck the head from the body of Durmukha's charioteer. With a keen-tipped bhalla he severed Kripa's gold-decorated bow, and with sharp arrows he struck down the others. The great charioteer, in the utmost fury, smote his enemies as though dancing; seeing his swiftness, even the gods rejoiced. All the charioteers with Bhishma at their head, seeing the marksmanship of Subhadra's son, judged him full of valor, as though he were Dhananjaya himself. His bow, gleaming like a whirling firebrand and moving with astonishing lightness, darted in every direction and rang out like the Gandiva."
