अचिन्तयद् अमेयात्मा नास्ति यौधिष्ठिरं बलम् ॥
एकाह्ना हि रणे भीष्मो नाशयेद् देवदानवान् ॥
किम् उ पाण्डुसुतान् युद्धे सबलान् सपदानुगान् ॥
द्रवते च महत् सैन्यं पाण्डवस्य महात्मनः ॥
एते च कौरवास् तूर्णं प्रभग्नान् दृश्य सोमकान् ॥
आद्रवन्ति रणे हृष्टा हर्षयन्तः पितामहम् ॥
सो ऽहं भीष्मं निहन्म्य् अद्य पाण्डवार्थाय दंशितः ॥
भारम् एतं विनेष्यामि पाण्डवानां महात्मनाम् ॥
अर्जुनो ऽपि शरैस् तीक्ष्णैर् वध्यमानो हि संयुगे ॥
कर्तव्यं नाभिजानाति रणे भीष्मस्य गौरवात् ॥
तथा चिन्तयतस् तस्य भूय एव पितामहः ॥
प्रेषयाम् आस संक्रुद्धः शरान् पार्थरथं प्रति ॥
तेषां बहुत्वाद् धि भृशं शराणां; दिशो ऽथ सर्वाः पिहिता बभूवुः ॥
न चान्तरिक्षं न दिशो न भूमिर्; न भास्करो ऽदृश्यत रश्मिमाली ॥

स तान्य् अनीकानि महाधनुष्माञ्; शिनिप्रवीरः सहसाभिपत्य ॥
चकार साहाय्यम् अथार्जुनस्य; विष्णुर् यथा वृत्रनिषूदनस्य ॥
विशीर्णनागाश्वरथध्वजौघं; भीष्मेण वित्रासितसर्वयोधम् ॥
युधिष्ठिरानीकम् अभिद्रवन्तं; प्रोवाच संदृश्य शिनिप्रवीरः ॥
क्व क्षत्रिया यास्यथ नैष धर्मः; सतां पुरस्तात् कथितः पुराणैः ॥

तान् वासवान् अन्तरजो निशम्य; नरेन्द्रमुख्यान् द्रवतः समन्तात् ॥

भीष्मं रथात् पश्य निपात्यमानं; द्रोणं च संख्ये सगणं मयाद्य ॥
नासौ रथः सात्वत कौरवाणां; क्रुद्धस्य मुच्येत रणे ऽद्य कश् चित् ॥
तस्माद् अहं गृह्य रथाङ्गम् उग्रं; प्राणं हरिष्यामि महाव्रतस्य ॥
निहत्य भीष्मं सगणं तथाजौ; द्रोणं च शैनेय रथप्रवीरम् ॥
प्रीतिं करिष्यामि धनंजयस्य; राज्ञश् च भीमस्य तथाश्विनोश् च ॥
निहत्य सर्वान् धृतराष्ट्रपुत्रांस्; तत्पक्षिणो ये च नरेन्द्रमुख्याः ॥
राज्येन राजानम् अजातशत्रुं; संपादयिष्याम्य् अहम् अद्य हृष्टः ॥

bhīṣmaṃ rathāt paśya nipātyamānaṃ; droṇaṃ ca saṃkhye sagaṇaṃ mayādya ||
nāsau rathaḥ sātvata kauravāṇāṃ; kruddhasya mucyeta raṇe 'dya kaś cit ||
tasmād ahaṃ gṛhya rathāṅgam ugraṃ; prāṇaṃ hariṣyāmi mahāvratasya ||
nihatya bhīṣmaṃ sagaṇaṃ tathājau; droṇaṃ ca śaineya rathapravīram ||
prītiṃ kariṣyāmi dhanaṃjayasya; rājñaś ca bhīmasya tathāśvinoś ca ||
nihatya sarvān dhṛtarāṣṭraputrāṃs; tatpakṣiṇo ye ca narendramukhyāḥ ||
rājyena rājānam ajātaśatruṃ; saṃpādayiṣyāmy aham adya hṛṣṭaḥ ||
Then Krishna, seeing Bhishma's prowess, noting the mighty-armed Partha's restrained fighting, and watching how Bhishma, standing between the two armies, poured forth ceaseless showers of arrows in battle, blazed like the sun, and struck down the finest warriors of the son of Pandu as though bringing about the end of an age within Yudhishthira's army, could not bear it any longer. The Blessed Keshava, slayer of enemy heroes, immeasurable in spirit, thought: 'Yudhishthira's army will be no more. For in a single day of battle Bhishma could destroy gods and demons — how much more the Pandavas with their army and followers. The great army of the Pandava is fleeing; these Kauravas, seeing the Somakas broken, rush forward joyfully, delighting the grandsire. Therefore I myself, armed today for the sake of the Pandavas, will slay Bhishma and lift this burden from the great-souled sons of Pandu. Yet Arjuna, though struck by sharp arrows, out of reverence for Bhishma does not know what he must do in this battle.' While He was so reflecting, the enraged grandsire once again sent arrows toward Partha's chariot. From the sheer multitude of these arrows all the quarters became covered; neither the sky, nor the directions, nor the earth, nor the radiant sun could be seen. Tumultuous, smoke-laden winds blew, and every quarter fell into turmoil. Drona, Vikarna, Jayadratha, Bhurishravas, Kritavarman, Kripa, Shrutayus, the king of the Ambashthas, Vinda and Anuvinda, Sudakshina, the eastern warriors, all the Sauviras, the Vasatis, the Kshudrakas, and the Malavas, obeying the command of King Shantanava, rushed swiftly upon the diademed Arjuna. The grandson of Shini saw Arjuna surrounded by many hundreds of thousands of streams of cavalry, infantry, and chariots, and by the leaders of elephants. Seeing that Arjuna and Vasudeva, the finest of weapon-bearers, were assailed on every side by foot soldiers, elephants, horses, and chariots, the hero of Shini quickly came to their aid. The great archer Satyaki charged swiftly at these battle-lines and gave help to Arjuna, as Vishnu once helped the slayer of Vritra. Then the hero of Shini saw Yudhishthira's army — its elephants, horses, chariots, and banners shattered, wholly terrified by Bhishma, and fleeing toward its own camp — and said: 'Where are you fleeing, kshatriyas? This is not the dharma proclaimed by the ancients before the virtuous. Do not abandon your own vow, O foremost heroes; uphold your own warrior's dharma.' Hearing this, the offspring of Vasava, seeing the foremost kings fleeing on every side, noting the mildness of Partha's fighting and Bhishma's ever-mounting assault, could bear it no longer. The glorious lord of all the Dasharhas, watching the Kurus advancing from every direction, addressed the grandson of Shini with praise: 'Let those who flee simply flee, O hero of Shini; let those who still stand, O Satvata, flee as well. Watch: today I myself will cast Bhishma down from his chariot in battle, and Drona together with his troop. No chariot of the Kauravas shall escape my wrath today, O Satvata. Therefore I shall seize the terrible chariot-wheel and take the life of the keeper of the great vow. Having slain Bhishma with his troop in battle, and Drona, the foremost of charioteers, O grandson of Shini, I shall bring joy to Dhananjaya, to the king, to Bhima, and to both sons of Madri. Having slain all the sons of Dhritarashtra and the chief kings on their side, I shall today, rejoicing, bestow the kingdom upon King Ajatashatru.'

Here Krishna's resolve reveals His nature as the protector of His devotee: for the sake of the Pandavas He is ready to set aside even His own pledge not to take up arms. His anger does not spring from vanity; it answers the suffering of those who have placed their trust in Him.
