Then Bhishma, swiftly turning the slaughter of his foes into a river of blood and foam, passed by Saubhadra and, undismayed in spirit, went toward the mahāratha Partha. Then Kiritamali, laughing with a marvelous look, with the great roaring twang of the Gandiva and a dense net of arrows, destroyed the web of great astras. The great-souled bearer of the monkey banner, untiring in action, swiftly showered Bhishma, the foremost of all bowmen, with torrents of arrows and bright bhallas. The world, the Kurus and the Srinjayas, beheld this duel of chariots between Bhishma and Dhananjaya, each undaunted, their bows resounding with such a terrible roar -- two supreme among good men.'

The chapter narrows the whole battlefield down to the duel of Bhishma and Arjuna. Outwardly this is a clash of two great archers, but within it a deeper line is already at work: Arjuna, with the banner of Hanuman and Krishna on his chariot, stands against the whole weight of the old debt of the Kurus.
