संजय उवाच
क्षयं मनुष्यदेहानां गजवाजिरथक्षयम् ॥
शृणु राजन् स्थिरो भूत्वा तवैवापनयो महान् ॥
धृष्टद्युम्नस् तु शल्येन पीडितो नवभिः शरैः ॥
पीडयाम् आस संक्रुद्धो मद्राधिपतिम् आयसैः ॥
तत्राद्भुतम् अपश्याम पार्षतस्य पराक्रमम् ॥
न्यवारयत यत् तूर्णं शल्यं समितिशोभनम् ॥
नान्तरं ददृशे कश् चित् तयोः संरब्धयो रणे ॥
मुहूर्तम् इव तद् युद्धं तयोः समम् इवाभवत् ॥
ततः शल्यो महाराज धृष्टद्युम्नस्य संयुगे ॥
धनुश् चिच्छेद भल्लेन पीतेन निशितेन च ॥
अथैनं शरवर्षेण छादयाम् आस भारत ॥
गिरिं जलागमे यद्वज् जलदा जलधारिणः ॥
अभिमन्युस् तु संक्रुद्धो धृष्टद्युम्ने निपीडिते ॥
अभिदुद्राव वेगेन मद्रराजरथं प्रति ॥
ततो मद्राधिपरथं कार्ष्णिः प्राप्यातिकोपनः ॥
आर्तायनिम् अमेयात्मा विव्याध विशिखैस् त्रिभिः ॥

dhṛṣṭadyumnas tu śalyena pīḍito navabhiḥ śaraiḥ ||
pīḍayām āsa saṃkruddho madrādhipatim āyasaiḥ ||
tatrādbhutam apaśyāma pārṣatasya parākramam ||
nyavārayata yat tūrṇaṃ śalyaṃ samitiśobhanam ||
nāntaraṃ dadṛśe kaś cit tayoḥ saṃrabdhayo raṇe ||
muhūrtam iva tad yuddhaṃ tayoḥ samam ivābhavat ||
tataḥ śalyo mahārāja dhṛṣṭadyumnasya saṃyuge ||
dhanuś ciccheda bhallena pītena niśitena ca ||
athainaṃ śaravarṣeṇa chādayām āsa bhārata ||
giriṃ jalāgame yadvaj jaladā jaladhāriṇaḥ ||
abhimanyus tu saṃkruddho dhṛṣṭadyumne nipīḍite ||
abhidudrāva vegena madrarājarathaṃ prati ||
tato madrādhiparathaṃ kārṣṇiḥ prāpyātikopanaḥ ||
ārtāyanim ameyātmā vivyādha viśikhais tribhiḥ ||
Sanjaya said: 'Listen, O king, having steadied yourself: the destruction of human bodies and the annihilation of elephants, horses, and chariots is indeed your great error. Dhrishtadyumna, tormented by Shalya with nine arrows, in fury began to press the lord of the Madras hard with iron shafts. There we saw a wonder, the prowess of Parshata: he swiftly checked Shalya, the ornament of battle. In the fight between these two furious warriors no one saw any advantage; for a while that battle seemed evenly matched. Then, O great king, in that combat Shalya cut Dhrishtadyumna's bow with a sharp, golden bhalla arrow, and then covered him with a rain of arrows, O Bharata, as water-laden clouds cover a mountain in the rainy season. When Dhrishtadyumna was thus hard-pressed, enraged Abhimanyu swiftly charged toward the chariot of the king of the Madras. Reaching the chariot of the lord of the Madras, Karshni, greatly enraged and of immeasurable spirit, pierced Artayani with three arrows.'
