भगदत्तः प्रभिन्नेन कुञ्जरेण विशां पते ॥
अपतत् सहसा तत्र यत्र भीमो व्यवस्थितः ॥
आपतन्न् एव च रणे भीमसेनं शिलाशितैः ॥
अदृश्यं समरे चक्रे जीमूत इव भास्करम् ॥
अभिमन्युमुखास् तत्र नामृष्यन्त महारथाः ॥
भीमस्याच्छादनं संख्ये स्वबाहुबलम् आश्रिताः ॥
त एनं शरवर्षेण समन्तात् पर्यवारयन् ॥
गजं च शरवृष्ट्या तं बिभिदुस् ते समन्ततः ॥
स शस्त्रवृष्ट्याभिहतः प्राद्रवद् द्विगुणं पदम् ॥
प्राग्ज्योतिषगजो राजन् नानालिङ्गैः सुतेजनैः ॥
संजातरुधिरोत्पीडः प्रेक्षणीयो ऽभवद् रणे ॥
गभस्तिभिर् इवार्कस्य संस्यूतो जलदो महान् ॥
स चोदितो मदस्रावी भगदत्तेन वारणः ॥
अभ्यधावत तान् सर्वान् कालोत्सृष्ट इवान्तकः ॥
द्विगुणं जवम् आस्थाय कम्पयंश् चरणैर् महीम् ॥
तस्य तत् सुमहद् रूपं दृष्ट्वा सर्वे महारथाः ॥
असह्यं मन्यमानास् ते नातिप्रमनसो ऽभवन् ॥
ततस् तु नृपतिः क्रुद्धो भीमसेनं स्तनान्तरे ॥
आजघान नरव्याघ्र शरेण नतपर्वणा ॥
सो ऽतिविद्धो महेष्वासस् तेन राज्ञा महारथः ॥
मूर्छयाभिपरीताङ्गो ध्वजयष्टिम् उपाश्रितः ॥
तांस् तु भीतान् समालक्ष्य भीमसेनं च मूर्छितम् ॥
ननाद बलवन् नादं भगदत्तः प्रतापवान् ॥

sa śastravṛṣṭyābhihataḥ prādravad dviguṇaṃ padam ||
prāgjyotiṣagajo rājan nānāliṅgaiḥ sutejanaiḥ ||
saṃjātarudhirotpīḍaḥ prekṣaṇīyo 'bhavad raṇe ||
gabhastibhir ivārkasya saṃsyūto jalado mahān ||
sa codito madasrāvī bhagadattena vāraṇaḥ ||
abhyadhāvata tān sarvān kālotsṛṣṭa ivāntakaḥ ||
dviguṇaṃ javam āsthāya kampayaṃś caraṇair mahīm ||
tasya tat sumahad rūpaṃ dṛṣṭvā sarve mahārathāḥ ||
asahyaṃ manyamānās te nātipramanaso 'bhavan ||
tatas tu nṛpatiḥ kruddho bhīmasenaṃ stanāntare ||
ājaghāna naravyāghra śareṇa nataparvaṇā ||
so 'tividdho maheṣvāsas tena rājñā mahārathaḥ ||
mūrchayābhiparītāṅgo dhvajayaṣṭim upāśritaḥ ||
tāṃs tu bhītān samālakṣya bhīmasenaṃ ca mūrchitam ||
nanāda balavan nādaṃ bhagadattaḥ pratāpavān ||
Bhagadatta, on his maddened elephant, O lord of men, suddenly charged to where Bhima stood. Already advancing in the battle, with sharpened arrows he made Bhimasena invisible in the fight, as a cloud hides the sun. The great chariot-warriors led by Abhimanyu, relying on the strength of their own arms, could not bear that Bhima was covered with arrows in the battle. They surrounded Bhagadatta from every side with a shower of arrows, and pierced his elephant through from all around with a rain of shafts. Struck by that shower of weapons, the elephant of Pragjyotisha ran with a doubled stride, O king; with various gleaming marks and streams of blood breaking forth, it became an astonishing spectacle in the battle, like a great cloud interwoven with the rays of the sun. Urged on by Bhagadatta, that elephant, streaming with must, charged at them all like Antaka let loose by Time, taking up double speed and shaking the earth with its steps. Seeing its enormous form, all the great chariot-warriors, deeming it unbearable, lost their spirit. Then the enraged king, O tiger among men, struck Bhimasena in the chest with a well-curved arrow. Deeply pierced by that king, the great chariot-warrior and mighty archer was overcome by a swoon and leaned upon the shaft of his banner. Seeing them frightened and Bhimasena unconscious, mighty Bhagadatta let out a great roar.
