It had a prosperous people, was noble, its kinsmen content and honored, having done much good, glorious and resolute. It was guarded by foremost men, victorious, who had many times performed great deeds, renowned throughout the world and like the guardians of the world, my son. It was defended by many kshatriyas, esteemed on earth, who had come to us of their own will with their forces and their retinues. It was full, like the great ocean, filled from every side by rivers; covered with chariots and elephants that seemed wingless yet resembled wings. It was a terrible ocean whose waters were its many warriors and whose waves and ripples were its mounts; crowded with throwing weapons, swords, maces, shaktis, arrows, and prasas. It was dense with banners and ornaments, strewn with jeweled cloth, shaken by its moving mounts at the speed of the wind; vast, roaring as though boundless as the sea. It was guarded by Drona and Bhishma, by Kritavarman, by Kripa and Duhshasana, by Jayadratha and others, by Bhagadatta, Vikarna, Drauni, Saubala, and the Bahlikas; protected by the world's finest heroes, men of substance and great soul. And if such an army was struck down in battle, this is ancient fate."

Dhritarashtra's imagination turns the army into an ocean: heroes, weapons, banners, and chariots become its currents and waves. But the might of an ocean does not save it, when the king himself is forced to admit that fate has done its work.
