Sanjaya said: 'Dhananjaya, pierced by arrows, breathed heavily like a mighty elephant struck by a goad, and in battle he forcibly severed the bows of the maharathas arrow by arrow. Having in an instant cut down the bows of these valiant kings, the great-souled Arjuna pierced them all at once with arrows, intending to bring about their complete destruction. Struck by the son of Shakra, they fell in battle, bloodied, their limbs shattered, their heads fallen, their armor torn apart, their life departed. Overwhelmed by Partha's might, they perished together and fell to the ground in varied forms. Having seen these princes slain in battle, the king of the Trigartas at once advanced. Then thirty-two other rear-guards of those chariots rushed upon Partha. Surrounding Partha in just the same way and drawing their loud-sounding bows, they showered him with a great flood of arrows, as clouds pour streams of water upon a mountain. Pressed by this rain of arrows, Dhananjaya grew angry in the fight and with sixty arrows polished with oil struck down these rear-guards as well. Having conquered these sixty chariots in battle and destroyed the forces of the kings, the glorious Dhananjaya, his heart rejoicing, hastened toward the slaying of Bhishma. The king of the Trigartas, seeing these maharathas and his own kinsmen slain, pushed those kings forward in battle and hastened against Partha to kill him. Seeing that Dhananjaya, the foremost of weapon-bearers, was being attacked, Shikhandin and the others, weapons sharp in hand, advanced to protect Arjuna's chariot. But Partha, seeing these warrior-heroes advancing together with the king of the Trigartas, destroyed them in battle with sharp arrows loosed from the Gandiva. Wishing to go to Bhishma, he saw in the fight Duryodhana and the kings led by Saindhava, trying to block his way. Closing with them and fighting for but a moment with his strength, the boundlessly valiant hero left the king, Jayadratha, and the other lords, and then, mighty and firm of mind, bow and arrows in hand, went in battle toward Gangeya.'

Arjuna does not linger with those who try to entangle him in combat. He shatters kings and rear-guards alike, yet his purpose stays clear: to reach Bhishma. The warriors around him become waves that he cuts through without losing his direction.
