Sanjaya said: "Vikarna, your son, coming upon resolute Chitrasena who had lost his chariot, took him up onto his own. While all this was happening amid the loud and violent tumult, Bhishma, son of Shantanu, swiftly attacked Yudhishthira. Then the Srinjayas, with their chariots, elephants, and horses, trembled and thought that Yudhishthira had fallen into the very mouth of death. But mighty Yudhishthira the Kaurava, together with the twins, advanced upon the great archer, the tiger among men, Bhishma son of Shantanu. Loosing thousands of arrows in the fight, the son of Pandu covered Bhishma as a cloud covers the sun. Gangeya received these nets of arrows, skillfully aimed by Yudhishthira, by the hundreds and thousands, O Bharata. And just so the nets of arrows loosed by Bhishma, O venerable one, were seen in the sky like flocks of birds in flight. Within half a wink, Bhishma, son of Shantanu, made the son of Kunti vanish from sight in the battle, wrapping him in layers of arrows. Then the enraged King Yudhishthira loosed at the great-souled Kaurava a naracha like unto a venomous serpent. But the great warrior Bhishma, with a kshurapra, cut it down in the fight before it had even reached its mark, O king. Having cut down that naracha, which was like Time itself, Bhishma slew the gold-adorned horses of the lord of the Kauravas. Yudhishthira, son of Dharma, abandoning his horseless chariot, swiftly mounted the chariot of great-souled Nakula. Then Bhishma, conqueror of enemy cities, greatly enraged, came upon the two twins in the battle and covered them with arrows. Seeing those two afflicted by Bhishma's arrows, O great king, Yudhishthira, desiring Bhishma's death, fell into deep anxiety. Then he urged on the kings subject to him and the bands of his friends: 'All of you, slay Bhishma, son of Shantanu!' Having heard the words of Partha, all those kings surrounded the grandsire with a great array of chariots."

Bhishma is shown once more as a force able to change the mood of an entire army with a single movement: the Srinjayas already see Yudhishthira in the jaws of death. Yet Yudhishthira's answer is not flight but the marshaling of a common effort against the one man who is holding the whole front.
