अशोभेतां यथा दैत्यदेवसेने समुद्यते ॥
अभ्यद्रवन्त समरे ते ऽन्योन्यं वै समन्ततः ॥
रथास् तु रथिभिस् तूर्णं प्रेषिताः परमाहवे ॥
युगैर् युगानि संश्लिष्य युयुधुः पार्थिवर्षभाः ॥
दन्तिनां युध्यमानानां संघर्षात् पावको ऽभवत् ॥
दन्तेषु भरतश्रेष्ठ सधूमः सर्वतोदिशम् ॥
प्रासैर् अभिहताः के चिद् गजयोधाः समन्ततः ॥
पतमानाः स्म दृश्यन्ते गिरिशृङ्गान् नगा इव ॥
पादाताश् चाप्य् अदृश्यन्त निघ्नन्तो हि परस्परम् ॥
चित्ररूपधराः शूरा नखरप्रासयोधिनः ॥
अन्योन्यं ते समासाद्य कुरुपाण्डवसैनिकाः ॥
शस्त्रैर् नानाविधैर् घोरै रणे निन्युर् यमक्षयम् ॥
ततः शांतनवो भीष्मो रथघोषेण नादयन् ॥
अभ्यागमद् रणे पाण्डून् धनुःशब्देन मोहयन् ॥
पाण्डवानां रथाश् चापि नदन्तो भैरवस्वनम् ॥
अभ्यद्रवन्त संयत्ता धृष्टद्युम्नपुरोगमाः ॥
ततः प्रववृते युद्धं तव तेषां च भारत ॥
नराश्वरथनागानां व्यतिषक्तं परस्परम् ॥

anyonyaṃ te samāsādya kurupāṇḍavasainikāḥ ||
śastrair nānāvidhair ghorai raṇe ninyur yamakṣayam ||
tataḥ śāṃtanavo bhīṣmo rathaghoṣeṇa nādayan ||
abhyāgamad raṇe pāṇḍūn dhanuḥśabdena mohayan ||
pāṇḍavānāṃ rathāś cāpi nadanto bhairavasvanam ||
abhyadravanta saṃyattā dhṛṣṭadyumnapurogamāḥ ||
tataḥ pravavṛte yuddhaṃ tava teṣāṃ ca bhārata ||
narāśvarathanāgānāṃ vyatiṣaktaṃ parasparam ||
These two armies, fighting each other in battle, O lord of men, shone like the risen armies of the daityas and the gods. From every side they rushed upon one another. Chariots, swiftly driven by their charioteers in the great battle, locked yoke to yoke and fought, and the foremost of kings battled at close quarters. From the clash of the fighting elephants, fire, thick with smoke, sprang up on their tusks, O best of the Bharatas, visible on every side. Some elephant-warriors, struck by spears, were seen falling on every side, like trees from mountain slopes. Footmen too could be seen: heroes in colorful array struck one another down, fighting even with claws and spears. Having closed with one another, the warriors of the Kurus and the Pandavas, with various dreadful weapons, sent their foes to the abode of Yama. Then Bhishma, son of Shantanu, making the din of his chariot resound and confounding his enemies with the twang of his bow, fell upon the Pandavas in battle. And the chariots of the Pandavas, led by Dhrishtadyumna, gathered and roaring with a fearsome sound, rushed forth to meet him. After that, O Bharata, a battle unfolded between thy warriors and theirs, in which men, horses, chariots, and elephants were mingled together.

The comparison to the armies of the gods and the daityas gives the battle a cosmic scale, yet the description at once brings it back down to earth: locked yokes, smoke from tusks, falling warriors, close hand-to-hand combat. Grandeur without dharma quickly turns into a dense tangle of suffering.
