संजय उवाच
न द्रोणः समरे पार्थं जानीते प्रियम् आत्मनः ॥
क्षत्रधर्मं पुरस्कृत्य पार्थो वा गुरुम् आहवे ॥
न क्षत्रिया रणे राजन् वर्जयन्ति परस्परम् ॥
निर्मर्यादं हि युध्यन्ते पितृभिर् भ्रातृभिः सह ॥
रणे भारत पार्थेन द्रोणो विद्धस् त्रिभिः शरैः ॥
नाचिन्तयत तान् बाणान् पार्थचापच्युतान् युधि ॥
शरवृष्ट्या पुनः पार्थश् छादयाम् आस तं रणे ॥
प्रजज्वाल च रोषेण गहने ऽग्निर् इवोत्थितः ॥
ततो ऽर्जुनं रणे द्रोणः शरैः संनतपर्वभिः ॥
वारयाम् आस राजेन्द्र नचिराद् इव भारत ॥
saṃjaya uvāca
na droṇaḥ samare pārthaṃ jānīte priyam ātmanaḥ ||
kṣatradharmaṃ puraskṛtya pārtho vā gurum āhave ||
na kṣatriyā raṇe rājan varjayanti parasparam ||
nirmaryādaṃ hi yudhyante pitṛbhir bhrātṛbhiḥ saha ||
raṇe bhārata pārthena droṇo viddhas tribhiḥ śaraiḥ ||
nācintayata tān bāṇān pārthacāpacyutān yudhi ||
śaravṛṣṭyā punaḥ pārthaś chādayām āsa taṃ raṇe ||
prajajvāla ca roṣeṇa gahane 'gnir ivotthitaḥ ||
tato 'rjunaṃ raṇe droṇaḥ śaraiḥ saṃnataparvabhiḥ ||
vārayām āsa rājendra nacirād iva bhārata ||
Sanjaya said: 'Placing the kshatriya's dharma first, Drona in the fight did not think of Partha as dear to himself, nor did Partha think of his teacher as dear in the battle. Warriors, O king, do not spare one another on the field; they fight without restraint even against fathers and brothers. In the battle, O Bharata, Drona was pierced by Partha with three arrows, but he paid no heed to these shafts loosed from Arjuna's bow. Then Partha covered him in the fight with a rain of arrows, and Drona blazed up with fury like a fire risen in a dense thicket. After that Drona very soon began to check Arjuna in the battle with arrows of bent joints, O lord of kings, O Bharata.'
