Sanjaya said: 'Then your father, enraged, struck the Parthas together with their armies on all sides with sharp, excellent arrows. He wounded Bhima with twelve arrows, Satyaki with nine, Nakula with three, Sahadeva with seven, and drove twelve arrows into Yudhishthira's arms and chest. Then, having wounded Dhrishtadyumna, mighty Bhishma roared loudly. Nakula struck him with six arrows, Madhava-Satyaki with three, Dhrishtadyumna with seventy, Bhimasena with five, and Yudhishthira with twelve; thus they wounded the grandsire in return. Drona, having wounded Satyaki, struck Bhimasena, hitting each of them with five sharp arrows like the staff of Yama. And the two of them pierced Drona, the finest of brahmins, in return, each with three straight arrows, as if with goads upon a great elephant. The Sauviras, Kitavas, easterners, westerners, northerners, the Malavas, Abhishahas, Shurasenas, Shibis, and Vasatis, though struck by sharp arrows, did not abandon Bhishma in the battle. Likewise the others, though beaten by the great-souled Pandavas, advanced upon the Pandavas with weapons of every kind in hand, while the Pandavas, O king, surrounded the grandsire.'

The opening of the chapter shows both forces at once: Bhishma and Drona rain blows on the Pandavas, yet the Pandavas do not give up their encirclement of Bhishma. The center of the battle remains the same — the grandsire, around whom loyalty, duty, and danger converge.
