धृतराष्ट्र उवाच
कथं शिखण्डी गाङ्गेयम् अभ्यवर्तत संयुगे ॥
पाण्डवाश् च तथा भीष्मं तन् ममाचक्ष्व संजय ॥
संजय उवाच
ततः प्रभाते विमले सूर्यस्योदयनं प्रति ॥
वाद्यमानासु भेरीषु मृदङ्गेष्व् आनकेषु च ॥
ध्मायत्सु दधिवर्णेषु जलजेषु समन्ततः ॥
शिखण्डिनं पुरस्कृत्य निर्याताः पाण्डवा युधि ॥
कृत्वा व्यूहं महाराज सर्वशत्रुनिबर्हणम् ॥
शिखण्डी सर्वसैन्यानाम् अग्र आसीद् विशां पते ॥
चक्ररक्षौ ततस् तस्य भीमसेनधनंजयौ ॥
पृष्ठतो द्रौपदेयाश् च सौभद्रश् चैव वीर्यवान् ॥
सात्यकिश् चेकितानश् च तेषां गोप्ता महारथः ॥
धृष्टद्युम्नस् ततः पश्चात् पाञ्चालैर् अभिरक्षितः ॥
ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा यमाभ्यां सहितः प्रभुः ॥
प्रययौ सिंहनादेन नादयन् भरतर्षभ ॥
विराटस् तु ततः पश्चात् स्वेन सैन्येन संवृतः ॥
द्रुपदश् च महाराज ततः पश्चाद् उपाद्रवत् ॥
केकया भ्रातरः पञ्च धृष्टकेतुश् च वीर्यवान् ॥
जघनं पालयाम् आस पाण्डुसैन्यस्य भारत ॥
एवं व्यूह्य महत् सैन्यं पाण्डवास् तव वाहिनीम् ॥
अभ्यद्रवन्त संग्रामे त्यक्त्वा जीवितम् आत्मनः ॥

śikhaṇḍī sarvasainyānām agra āsīd viśāṃ pate ||
cakrarakṣau tatas tasya bhīmasenadhanaṃjayau ||
pṛṣṭhato draupadeyāś ca saubhadraś caiva vīryavān ||
sātyakiś cekitānaś ca teṣāṃ goptā mahārathaḥ ||
dhṛṣṭadyumnas tataḥ paścāt pāñcālair abhirakṣitaḥ ||
tato yudhiṣṭhiro rājā yamābhyāṃ sahitaḥ prabhuḥ ||
prayayau siṃhanādena nādayan bharatarṣabha ||
virāṭas tu tataḥ paścāt svena sainyena saṃvṛtaḥ ||
drupadaś ca mahārāja tataḥ paścād upādravat ||
kekayā bhrātaraḥ pañca dhṛṣṭaketuś ca vīryavān ||
jaghanaṃ pālayām āsa pāṇḍusainyasya bhārata ||
evaṃ vyūhya mahat sainyaṃ pāṇḍavās tava vāhinīm ||
abhyadravanta saṃgrāme tyaktvā jīvitam ātmanaḥ ||
Dhritarashtra said: "How did Shikhandi advance in battle against the son of Ganga, and how did the Pandavas move against Bhishma? Tell me this, Sanjaya." Sanjaya said: "Then, on a clear morning, at sunrise, when the bheri drums, mridangas, and anakas sounded, and white conch shells blared on every side, the Pandavas marched out to battle, placing Shikhandi in front. Having formed, great king, a battle array that crushes all enemies, they set Shikhandi at the head of all the troops, O lord of the people. Bhimasena and Dhananjaya became the guardians of his wheels; behind stood the sons of Draupadi and the valiant Saubhadra. Satyaki and Chekitana, great chariot-warriors, were their protectors; behind them came Dhrishtadyumna, guarded by the Panchalas. After that King Yudhishthira, the lord, advanced together with the two twins, filling the field with a lion's roar, O bull of the Bharatas. Virata followed behind, surrounded by his own army, and then Drupada, the great king, hastened on. The five Kekaya brothers and the valiant Dhrishtaketu guarded the rear of the Pandava army, O Bharata. Thus, having arrayed their great host, the Pandavas rushed upon your army in battle, sparing not their own lives."
