Into the breach of the boundlessly mighty Bhimasena they broke in, and of the warrior Satyaki, and of Dhrishtadyumna, O lord. "Strike Drona, Drona!" the fierce Panchalas urged one another; "Don't yield Drona!" your sons urged all the Kurus. "Drona, Drona!" cried some, "Not Drona!" others; and among the Kurus and the Pandavas a game of dice for Drona went on.

The battle for Drona's life is called a "game of dice" (droṇa-dyūta) -- a bitter echo of that dishonest game which set the whole war in motion. Then a kingdom was at stake; now, the life of a teacher; and both sides "play," staking everything against it. It is telling that the very word "dyūta" recalls the original sin of the feud. The verse teaches that evil sown once resounds through all that follows, and even the battle for the teacher is called a "game of dice," recalling its origin; that human fates and lives become stakes in a game of ambitions; and that a feud begun by a dishonest throw ends in a game as well -- but no longer for wealth, for life and death, since a falsehood once permitted turns the very being of men into a gambler's stake.
