अब्ययात् तत्र यत्र स्म द्रोणः पाण्डून् प्रमर्दति ॥
तं शरौघमहावर्तं शोणितोदं महाह्रदम् ॥
तीर्णः संशप्तकान् हत्वा प्रत्यदृश्यत फल्गुनः ॥
तस्य कीर्तिमतो लक्ष्म सूर्यप्रतिमतेजसः ॥
दीप्यमानम् अपश्याम तेजसा वानरध्वजम् ॥
etasminn antare jiṣṇur hatvā saṃśaptakān balī ||
abyayāt tatra yatra sma droṇaḥ pāṇḍūn pramardati ||
taṃ śaraughamahāvartaṃ śoṇitodaṃ mahāhradam ||
tīrṇaḥ saṃśaptakān hatvā pratyadṛśyata phalgunaḥ ||
tasya kīrtimato lakṣma sūryapratimatejasaḥ ||
dīpyamānam apaśyāma tejasā vānaradhvajam ||
Meanwhile the mighty Jishnu, having slain the Samshaptakas, moved toward the place where Drona was crushing the Pandavas. Having crossed that great lake with whirlpools of streaming arrows, its water made of blood, having [already] slain the Samshaptakas, Phalguna came into view. The emblem on his banner — his, the glorious one, blazing with a brilliance like the sun's, ablaze with its own splendor — the banner with the monkey — we beheld.

Arjuna appears, 'having crossed the great lake whose waters are blood' — he has passed through the very sea of death and emerges from it as from a crossing. His appearance, with a banner 'blazing like the sun,' brings hope to his own who are besieged and terror to the enemy. It is telling that the very banner itself — bearing Hanuman, the devoted servant of the Lord — shines first, before the warrior himself. The verse teaches that there is an arrival which by itself changes the course of events: the appearance of a deliverer in the hour of despair is itself a turning point; that one who has passed through the sea of destruction unbroken carries with him the light of hope; and that the banner of the devotee, blazing like the sun, proclaims not merely a warrior but a power advancing under the sign of service to the Supreme — and therefore certain.
