सुतास् तव महाराज त्रिंशत् त्रिदशसंनिभाः ॥
गान्धारराजः कितवः शल्यो भूरिश्रवास् तथा ॥
पार्श्वतः सिन्धुराजस्य व्यराजन्त महारथाः ॥

At the sides of the king of Sindhu, with Ashvatthaman at the head, [stood] your sons, O great sovereign -- thirty, like gods. The king of Gandhara [Shakuni] the gambler, Shalya, and likewise Bhurishravas, great chariot-warriors, shone at the sides of the king of Sindhu.

Around Jayadratha the whole flower of the enemy camp closes in -- thirty sons of Dhritarashtra, Ashvatthaman, Shakuni, Shalya, Bhurishravas: the fiercest of the fierce are gathered in one place. Thus is shown the disproportion of the trap being prepared: against a single boy is massed a force capable of crushing whole armies. It is significant that among them is Shakuni the "gambler," the instigator of the whole feud, and here he stands at the center of a new crime. The verse teaches that for an unlawful deed injustice does not stint, gathering immense might against the weak; that a mass of the mightiest against one is not valor but a sign of dishonor being prepared; and that the presence of Shakuni the gambler alongside all these warriors again recalls: at the root of this trap too, as of the whole war, stands the same injustice that began with a dishonest game.
