द्रोणस्य दृढम् अव्यग्रम् अनीकप्रवरं युधि ॥
पितॄणां जयम् आकाङ्क्षन्न् अवगाहे भिनद्मि च ॥
उपदिष्टो हि मे पित्रा योगो ऽनीकस्य भेदने ॥
नोत्सहे तु विनिर्गन्तुम् अहं कस्यां चिद् आपदि ॥

"Longing for victory for my fathers, I will plunge into Drona's firm, steady, foremost array in battle, and break through it. For my father indeed taught me the technique of breaching the array; however, I do not dare to make my way out of it, should I fall into any distress."

Here is the heart of the tragedy: Abhimanyu knows how to enter but not how to leave. Half-knowledge proves fatal — the boy honestly reveals his one flaw without concealing it. In this candor lies both valor and doom: he is ready for the feat, aware that the way back is unknown to him. It is telling that his father taught him half the art — and this incompleteness of instruction will prove ruinous. The verse teaches that incomplete knowledge is more dangerous than ignorance, for it instills false confidence where the essential is missing; that entering is easier than leaving, and wise is the one who weighs not only the beginning of a deed but its end; and that an honest admission of one's limit is a noble trait, but it does not avert disaster if those who hear it fail to protect the one going where he himself is powerless to escape.
