अपस्करैर् अधिष्ठानैर् ईषादण्डकबन्धुरैः ॥
अक्षैर् विमथितैश् चक्रैर् भग्नैश् च बहुधा रथैः ॥
शक्तिचापायुधैश् चापि पतितैश् च महाध्वजैः ॥
निहतैः क्षत्रियैर् अश्वैर् वारणैश् च विशां पते ॥
अगम्यकल्पा पृथिवी क्षणेनासीत् सुदारुणा ॥
वध्यतां राजपुत्राणां क्रन्दताम् इतरेतरम् ॥
प्रादुरासीन् महाशब्दो भीरूणां भयवर्धनः ॥
स शब्दो भरतश्रेष्ठ दिशः सर्वा व्यनादयत् ॥
apaskarair adhiṣṭhānair īṣādaṇḍakabandhuraiḥ ||
akṣair vimathitaiś cakrair bhagnaiś ca bahudhā rathaiḥ ||
śakticāpāyudhaiś cāpi patitaiś ca mahādhvajaiḥ ||
nihataiḥ kṣatriyair aśvair vāraṇaiś ca viśāṃ pate ||
agamyakalpā pṛthivī kṣaṇenāsīt sudāruṇā ||
vadhyatāṃ rājaputrāṇāṃ krandatām itaretaram ||
prādurāsīn mahāśabdo bhīrūṇāṃ bhayavardhanaḥ ||
sa śabdo bharataśreṣṭha diśaḥ sarvā vyanādayat ||
With [wrecked] chariot-bodies, platforms, poles, shafts and seats, shattered axles, broken wheels and chariots in many places, with kshatriyas, horses and elephants struck down, O sovereign, the earth in an instant became almost impassable, terrible. Among the dying princes, crying out to one another, a great uproar arose, increasing fear in the fainthearted.

The earth, strewn with wreckage and bodies, 'in an instant became impassable' -- an image of the complete collapse of order: where a disciplined array had stood, there is now a heap of the dismembered. And the cries of the dying 'increase the fear of the fainthearted': the terror of war is contagious, passing from the suffering to the timid. It is telling that the wail of the dying itself becomes a weapon that sows panic. The verse teaches that war in an instant turns the ordered into impassable chaos; that the suffering of the dying is not silent -- it cries out, and that cry sows terror around it; and that the tale, depicting the earth strewn with wreckage and the wailing of princes, reveals how swiftly a proud host becomes a heap of bodies and gear, and how contagious is the terror rising from the dying.
