धृतराष्ट्र उवाच
बालम् अत्यन्तसुखिनम् अवार्यबलदर्पितम् ॥
युद्धेषु कुशलं वीरं कुलपुत्रं तनुत्यजम् ॥
गाहमानम् अनीकानि सदश्वैस् तं त्रिहायनैः ॥
अपि यौधिष्ठिरात् सैन्यात् कश् चिद् अन्वपतद् रथी ॥
संजय उवाच
युधिष्ठिरो भीमसेनः शिखण्डी सात्यकिर् यमौ ॥
धृष्टद्युम्नो विराटश् च द्रुपदश् च सकेकयः ॥
धृष्टकेतुश् च संरब्धो मत्स्याश् चान्वपतन् रणे ॥
अभ्यद्रवन् परीप्सन्तो व्यूढानीकाः प्रहारिणः ॥
तान् दृष्ट्वा द्रवतः शूरांस् त्वदीया विमुखाभवन् ॥

bālam atyantasukhinam avāryabaladarpitam ||
yuddheṣu kuśalaṃ vīraṃ kulaputraṃ tanutyajam ||
gāhamānam anīkāni sadaśvais taṃ trihāyanaiḥ ||
api yaudhiṣṭhirāt sainyāt kaś cid anvapatad rathī ||
saṃjaya uvāca
yudhiṣṭhiro bhīmasenaḥ śikhaṇḍī sātyakir yamau ||
dhṛṣṭadyumno virāṭaś ca drupadaś ca sakekayaḥ ||
dhṛṣṭaketuś ca saṃrabdho matsyāś cānvapatan raṇe ||
abhyadravan parīpsanto vyūḍhānīkāḥ prahāriṇaḥ ||
tān dṛṣṭvā dravataḥ śūrāṃs tvadīyā vimukhābhavan ||
For the boy — raised in comfort, proud of his irresistible strength, a warrior skilled in battles, well-born, not sparing his life, who had cut into the ranks on fine three-year-old horses — did anyone among the charioteers of Yudhishthira's army rush after him? Yudhishthira, Bhimasena, Shikhandin, Satyaki, both twins, Dhrishtadyumna, Virata, and Drupada with the Kekayas rushed, striving to shield him, in battle array, valiant fighters. Having spotted those speeding warriors, your [warriors] turned back.

The elders, true to their vow, do indeed rush after the boy to shield him — their fault lies not in negligence but in the fact that their path will be barred. It is significant that your warriors, at the mere sight of the charging Pandavas, "turned back": nothing could have held them, had a fateful barrier not appeared. The verse teaches that a good intention, sincere and active, can be thwarted by a single unforeseen obstacle; that the blame for the boy's death will fall not on the elders' unwillingness but on the force that will stand in their way; and that the narrative, showing how the Pandavas strain to rescue him and how the enemy already flees before them, underscores this: salvation was close, and it was lost not through their fault but through the single barrier of which more is to come.
