परस्परं च नक्षत्रं हन्यमानं पुनः पुनः ॥
ग्रहैर् अपश्यन् सर्वे ते नात्मनस् तु कथं चन ॥
नदन्तं पाञ्चजन्यं च वृष्ण्यन्धकनिवेशने ॥
समन्तात् प्रत्यवाश्यन्त रासभा दारुणस्वराः ॥
एवं पश्यन् हृषीकेशः संप्राप्तं कालपर्ययम् ॥
त्रयोदश्याम् अमावास्यां तां दृष्ट्वा प्राब्रवीद् इदम् ॥
चतुर्दशी पञ्चदशी कृतेयं राहुणा पुनः ॥
तदा च भारते युद्धे प्राप्ता चाद्य क्षयाय नः ॥

nadantaṃ pāñcajanyaṃ ca vṛṣṇyandhakaniveśane ||

evaṃ paśyan hṛṣīkeśaḥ saṃprāptaṃ kālaparyayam ||
trayodaśyām amāvāsyāṃ tāṃ dṛṣṭvā prābravīd idam ||
caturdaśī pañcadaśī kṛteyaṃ rāhuṇā punaḥ ||
tadā ca bhārate yuddhe prāptā cādya kṣayāya naḥ ||
All of them saw constellations struck again and again by planets — but their own, not at all. When the conch Panchajanya sounded in the dwelling of the Vrishnis and Andhakas, from all sides donkeys responded with their terrible braying. Thus seeing the reversal of Time that had arrived, Hrishikesha, having observed the new moon on the thirteenth day, spoke these words: 'The fourteenth day has again been made the fifteenth by Rāhu, as it was then, at the battle of the Bharatas — and now it has come for our destruction.'

The image of the doomed being blind to their own fate is striking: they see planets striking the constellations of others, 'but their own — not at all' — the perishing cannot perceive their own destruction. Krishna alone, Hrishikesha, reads the portents correctly, recognizing in the unseasonable eclipse the same omen that preceded the great war. Thus it is revealed that the Lord, unlike blinded mortals, sees the course of Time clearly and accepts it. The verse teaches that the doomed are characteristically blind to their own lot, though they may notice the misfortunes of others; and that the Lord alone, master of time, discerns the arrival of the appointed hour without delusion and meets it not with fear but with calm recognition, for the vicissitudes of time are His own ordinance.
