ततो जिगमिषन्तस् ते वृष्ण्यन्धकमहारथाः ॥
सान्तःपुरास् तदा तीर्थयात्राम् ऐच्छन् नरर्षभाः ॥
ततो भोज्यं च भक्ष्यं च पेयं चान्धकवृष्णयः ॥
बहु नानाविधं चक्रुर् मद्यं मांसम् अनेकशः ॥
ततः सीधुषु सक्ताश् च निर्ययुर् नगराद् बहिः ॥
यानैर् अश्वैर् गजैश् चैव श्रीमन्तस् तिग्मतेजसः ॥
ततः प्रभासे न्यवसन् यथोद्देशं यथागृहम् ॥
प्रभूतभक्ष्यपेयास् ते सदारा यादवास् तदा ॥
tato jigamiṣantas te vṛṣṇyandhakamahārathāḥ ||
sāntaḥpurās tadā tīrthayātrām aicchan nararṣabhāḥ ||
tato bhojyaṃ ca bhakṣyaṃ ca peyaṃ cāndhakavṛṣṇayaḥ ||
bahu nānāvidhaṃ cakrur madyaṃ māṃsam anekaśaḥ ||
tataḥ sīdhuṣu saktāś ca niryayur nagarād bahiḥ ||
yānair aśvair gajaiś caiva śrīmantas tigmatejasaḥ ||
tataḥ prabhāse nyavasan yathoddeśaṃ yathāgṛham ||
prabhūtabhakṣyapeyās te sadārā yādavās tadā ||
Then those great warriors of the Vrishnis and Andhakas, together with their harems, desired to undertake a pilgrimage, bulls among men. The Andhakas and Vrishnis then prepared food, eatables, and drink in great abundance — wine and meat in multitude. Then, devoted to fermented drink, those glorious and fierce ones went forth from the city on carriages, horses, and elephants. The Yādavas then encamped at Prabhāsa, each in their place, in their dwellings, with abundant food and drink, together with their wives.

A pilgrimage to sacred waters, which by its very purpose ought to be an exercise in restraint, is turned by the doomed into an occasion for feasting: they carry to the holy place not fasting and prayer but wine and meat in multitude. Thus the very meaning of a pious act is perverted when the heart is enslaved by passion. The continence so recently adopted in fear is forgotten the moment vigilance slackens. A sacred site does not sanctify one who approaches it with an impure heart and carnal intentions; and a pilgrimage reduced to indulgence in wine, meat, and revelry brings no benefit but hastens destruction, for true holiness lies not in visiting a tīrtha but in the purity and self-restraint that the doomed no longer possessed.
